930 rust box

Sooner or later you may get to see everything. I never got a straight answer on this from the owner so actual background facts are unavailable to me. What I do know is this:
This was a 1976 - 1977 930 gear box because it has a short bell housing.
The serial numbers had been purposely ground off the serial boss; it was not a collision scrape.
The gear box had been in a collision since the bell housing had been welded to repair cracks.
The box had been through a vehicle fire evidenced by melted plastic and carbon stains.
I’m guessing that it had been under water for a year or more.
It took five days of soaking in solvent just to open the case works.
The rust was so deep it separated the case hardened material from the gears themselves.
It took an extra week of soaking just to free the gears from the input and pinion shafts.
There was almost nothing that could be salvaged.
After my report to him, he asked me to rebuild it. Fat chance, eh?

Re: 930 rust box

You may get that transmission to work again someday but with the rust pitting she'll whine like a princess...

Numbers ground off, fire, immersion? I wonder how many dead gangsters were in the car when they hauled it out of the swamp?

Re: 930 rust box

If the rust has not agressed the heat treatment of the gears, it will work perfectly again.
Just it needs to be dismounted and putted in a tribologic superfinishing machine for a night and it probably will work again.
This machine looks like a cup fullof strange stones and vibrating at high frequency. Some kind of acid is in the bath as well.
You shall try it first.

Check roesler.com there are those machines shown on the web
