G50/04

Hallo

Want to purchase the transaxle for my future GT 40.

Got an offer for a G50/04 ( switzerland)

I took some informations from a previous post.
Following this the G50/02 gearratios are pretty similar to the ones of the 04( in the 04 the 4th gear is a little longer).
So now i wonder what the comment "(very short gear ratios)" on the G50/02 meant.

By reading the gear ratios i would say that the 04 has longer ratios than the 03 but as the 5th gear has the same as an 03 they are just closer spaced. May be this is meant by the comment ?
I´m plan to go for a 331 engine which will peak power (app 450 -500 Hp) around 7200 RPM and also will go for 10,5X17" Wheels ( 315/35/17)

PUtting these datas into the very nice excel chart provided on this forum ( thank you) it looks pretty good to me
Speed at 7200:
1st 82 km/h 51 mph-------RPMDROP
2nd 136 km/h 85 mph-----2900
3rd 194 km/h 121 mph----2150
4th 251 km/h 156 mph----1650
5th 291 km/h 181 mph----1000

This top speed will put me in good situation vs the P´s on track days.
Also the RPM drop looks reasonable to me.

The 04 will be equipped with a 40/60 LSD.
Will also beef up the sideplates and install a external oil pump and oil cooler to spray the ring and pinion and gears.

Has anyone used a G50/04 ( i think the post 92 US models had it also) ?
Is there any other difference than the ratios compared to the 03?
What is your experience with the side shift conversions ( i would love to have the slim look of a flat endplate)?
Any other comments very welcome

Thanks
TOM

Hallo

Purchased a G50/ 04 for my RCR today.

As this gearboxes are a little long and as the require some modification i thought i could as well do one of this side shift conversions.

Would like to learn more about your experiences with it:
  • How difficult is the modification ?
  • What machine work has to be done ?
  • How is the shifting compared to the standard ?
  • Any reco for the sourcing of the parts for it ?
Thanks
TOM

This is an oft repeated urban myth. Everything that I have researched indicates that internally the G50/52 is the same as a G50/50, only difference being the end housing and mount.

WRT your G50/04. I think sideshifts are available from CMS who advertise on here.

Hi Tom,

There's some information on fitting a G50/03 on my website (see signature line below) and also my build thread.

Hallo Russ , interesting to hear.

I just copied it in because i wanted to show that the G50/04 has the same long first gear ratio, but than more closer and and more even staged 2nd to 5th gear with the final drive ratio of the G50/03. So for me in terms of ratios it is just perfect. Frankly all this talking about gearing for 200 mph is just not realistic, this cars getting so much air drag at higher speeds, that you would need massive power and very long straight to even reach 190 mph so a gearing for 185 - 190 should be fine in my opinion.

Thanks Tom - I used iWeb from Apple - I'm on a Macintosh computer. Let me know if you need any other help. I have more plans for this transaxle and will be posting updates to the site and here on my build thread..

Thanks Randy,

i will defintely come back to you. Could you pm me your email and phone number ?
For the side shifter, take a look at the CALIFORNIA MOTORSPORTS or the RENEGADE HYBRIDS website.

I will receive my gearbox end of next week, so will see what to do than. I will start my build with all the body work , becuase my engine takes 3 months to arrive (but i bet i will be worth the wait).
