California Smog Regs II (very specific question)

Thanks al for the responses to my first attempt at gathering info.

In order to drill down on a possible engine combo - Has anyone here registered a very modern looking (that could not be taken for a 1965 no matter how hard you squinted) completed car with a modern engine (for example an LS7). Without the benifit of SB100 (SB100 will not do anything for this combo if common sense is used).

If the car is required to conform to current smog regs at time of initial registration does it also have the requirement of having to go to a smog station every two years?

Can anyone shed some light on this specific question? Or know where I can look for an answer? I would not mind meeting the requirement but I would mind having to to a station and have some guy falling all over my prized possesion every two years.

Thanks Guys.

Re: California Smog Regs II (very specific question)

If the car is not a replica of anything, regardless if it looks "modern" or not, by SB100 standards it is considered a '60 model regardless of the engine installed. This is how guys get the FFR GTM registered. (Modern looking car with a LSx engine) John
Senate Bill 100

The following was ripped from SB100 in the link above:
Quote:
(2) In determining the vehicle model-year, the referee shall compare the vehicle to vehicles of the era that the vehicle most closely resembles. The referee shall assign the 1960 model-year to any specially constructed vehicle that does not sufficiently resemble a previously manufactured vehicle. The referee shall require only those emission control systems that are applicable to the established model-year and that the vehicle reasonably accommodates in its present form.

Re: California Smog Regs II (very specific question)

Thanks John,
This is exactly the kind of info I needed.

I am well aware of the "1960" way out for "a car that does not resemble" clause. My problem is ...... with my luck I'll get to the DMV and they will laugh me out of the place when I show up with a finished RCR SLC kit and ask to have it documented as a 1960 car. Can you confirm that there are actual GTM or Ultima builders that have used the SB100 to the effect noted in the SB100 verbage and that they are actually registerd as a 1960 vehicle? Or where I can go to confirm persons have actually done so?

Thanks again
Rob

Re: California Smog Regs II (very specific question)

Rob, check with David Borden over at ffcobra I'm pretty sure he did his GTM as a SB100. There are others, but he comes to mind.
Under SB100, you don't actually register the car as a 1960, they just use that smog spec. When registered, your registration will say 2008 SPCNS,(or what ever year you apply for registration). It's kind of strange, there must be hundreds of different home built cars that don't resemble one another other in any way, and with different makes and types of power plant, but they are all called SPCNS. I will follow up with this David Borden. Also I'm sure the "SPCNS" just stands for special constuction, so it follows that all the different types would all read the same.

again, good info
thanks
