Thanks for the info. Another question, is there a certian 016 I should look for? In one of your other posts you mentioned a 016-5N. I have e-mailed yards for the 016 and they always ask me for a VIN, model and engine size. I tell them that it is going in a kit car and that info does not matter.

Get an AFC box if you can; it has the 3.89 gears. The 5N boxes are much more plentiful but have 4.11 gears.

I'm in Southeastern Ohio and I have an 016-5N box. It cleaned up really well and I paid $200 for it. I was talked into using the Renault UN-1 box by MDA so now it's just sitting on my shop floor. You can have it for what I paid for it. Just let me know. You can email me at downard1@email.com

How do you like the UN1? I have done some reading on that one and still have not made up my mind between it and as Audi. Eric Martin who owns AE Auto Engineering has told me that the 016 is the to go.
Any other opinion's out there welcomed?

Rep Power: 7 | Re: $50 Audi 016... Well Joz,
To tell you the truth, they both work equally well at collecting dust on the shop floor. I'm a bit stalled out on the build right now as I wait for a bunch of backordered parts. Little things really, but each affects a series of 5 or so steps, which prevents subsequent steps. Ssssoooooo, I'm kind of on hold. Plust other jobs are poping up too. Anyway, The UN1 is supposed to be a much stronger transaxle, at least the input shaft is a bit larger. Remember, the 016 was used behind a rather small low hp engine. Hershel Byrd had one in his RF, and he ran it a bunch of miles without trouble. He said just don't sidestep the clutch. The UN1 looks longer and skinnier with a bunch of webbing, the 016 looks more like a chevy automatic from a distance with smooth cases. It would be time well spent reading search material on both units. Happy reading.

Thanks for the info, I will do that. I have lots of time to do the reading. Are UN1 hard to find here in the states?
