Rep Power: 4 | $50 Audi 016... I'm just wondering if others can still find sub $100 016's...?? The german parts recyclers in the northwest seem to have now figured out that the kit car guys use and want the old 016s laying around. The going price for a standard wrecker yard 016 is somewhere between $300 and $600 now. Getting one of these rebuilt and set up with an appropriate ratio and other mods at GTA is in the range of $3,000 last time I checked so a good used (and inherently stronger) G50 for $4,000 or so is starting to look pretty good.
So, are people still finding hundred buck 016s in some part of the USA? I have three of these in various ratios if anyone is looking for one... |

I have been using craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums to try and locate a 016 and not had much luck. What search engine are you using?

Rep Power: 4 | Re: $50 Audi 016... I have found a couple 016s on craigslist (love it) here in the Seattle area - one is an AAZ and the other is a 5N and both were a couple hundred bucks which is less than what the parts recyclers now want for one ($300-$600) in this part of the country. I also have an AFC and a 3U that were bought for $500 for both some time ago from a parts recycler. I didn't mind spending $500 for 016s with those ratios.
It's definitely hit or miss on craigslist. |

I guess I will need to shop in your area & pay the shipping charges to GA. If you run across any other Audi 016 that will work in our application, please let me know. My e-mail address is LJOZZ@aol.com.
Thanks

Anyway, if you have a Pick-N-Pull near you they sell transmissions for $75. You need to take it out though. I bought a Jaguar IRS complete with LSD from them for $198! |

Rep Power: 3 | Re: $50 Audi 016... Guys just a handy hint, if you want to get a 016 out at a u pullit the easy way just remove the 12-14 bolts from the rear section and the cover over the selector shaft, pull out the selector shaft, then just remove the rear section and then the bell housing diff section, it will save about 2 hours of cursing, rather than trying to pull the gearbox out in one piece, what happens if you try in one piece is the weight of the box hangs on the input shaft spline and then binds up on the clutch fingers, and they are ni on impossible to slide backwards on your own, i have pulled 4 of them and thats the easiest way to do it, hope it makes someones life easier.

I did not know that a Jaguar IRS, with LSD will work in a mid-engine application. What year/s do I look for?

Rep Power: 2 | Re: $50 Audi 016... I don't think you could use one for mid engine, I just stated that as an example to show what deals are availble there. These are usually go for $700-1000.
I have been thinking about what it would take to connect a convential 4 or 6 speed trans to one of these. The Jag uses Dana 44 ring and pinion (8.5") and is strong. I'm just not sure if it could be made short enough. |

One thing that struck me as I started putting the chassis together is how small these cars really are. 95" wheel base leaves no room for a regular style tranmission and diff. you would have to lengthen the chassis quite a bit. Maybe the super size 40 on the forum uses one. Dave

Rep Power: 4 | Re: $50 Audi 016... Thanks Pete, good suggestion. Sounds like a pretty good buy if you don't mind getting dirty (I don't mind) but we don't seem to have you-pick style auto wreckers here in the Seattle area. They (the auto wreckers) all pull the parts themselves and charge higher rates - usually one half the full retail of new. Might have something to do with liability - some goof in the past probably dropped a transmission on his foot and then sued the auto wrecker and, consequently, now they keep you on the clean side of the counter only. |

Rep Power: 2 | Re: $50 Audi 016... That's too bad Cliff, this place has so many good deals. There aren't many places that offer things for really good prices anymore. I usually go there every few months just to see if there is anything that I might need.
Every so often they get something like a Jag or Porsche. I keep hoping that one day I will find a 911 there with a 915 transaxle so I can get the transaxle. I'm looking for a R & P for fitment into my G31 transaxle. |

Use this link; it'll give you the listing in your area. When you call make sure it's a non-Quattro box. Search Results

Thanks I will keep that link and do some shopping. Question, why does it have to be non-Quattro type?

Joz | Joz,
The Quattro trans has another differential inside and an output shaft out the back for the rear wheels. You would have to lock that differential somehow to use it in a 2wd application.
I mentioned that because the salvage yard I got mine from had pulled a Quattro box the first trip I made there even though I told them over the phone that I needed a non-Quattro box.
