Audi 016 transaxle availability USA

Hi all, first post here, though I've spent hours now combing the archives regarding Audi 016 transaxles!

I'm looking for info regarding the 016 transaxle with the tall 0.64 5th gear.

I'm trying to definitively find out if any Audis with 016 transaxles and the 0.64 5th gears were imported to the USA - and if they were, which specific years and models they would be.

I know there are 016 trans's with 0.68 5ths imported to the USA in the '80-82 5000 diesels, and I know the 016 with the 0.48 5th is Europe-only, and I know there is an 0.60 5th in the 013 trans, etc., it's just that I can't seem to get a handle the 016 with the 0.64 5th gear.

Was the 016 trans with the 0.64 5th gear imported into the US?

If so, which years/models?

I believe the codes for the 016 with the 0.64 5th gears are:
4V, 5V, APP, APN, 2U, 3U, 6U

Any help you all could be would be much appreciated!

Best,

Andy

Hi Andy,

Here's a ratio chart you may find helpful. Remember, it's not just the fifth gear ratio that's relevant.

AAZ and AFC and 5N are all US imported cars - have all three of those in my garage or car. The AFC box is about as good as it gets for US imported cars. I don't believe the 3U was imported to the US (Europe only).

Good luck!

Hi Cliff, thanks.

I guess I should give more info on what I'm doing, ultimately I'm looking to use the 5th gear only, hopefully I can find an 016 with a 0.64 5th here in the US.

I have a Porsche 944 Turbo with an LS1 installed. Super fun car but too high revs on the freeway for my taste (~2900).

The 944 (083) trans is a variant of the Audi 016, 5th gears are swappable between the two transaxles.

The 944 Turbo 5th is 0.83, swapping in the 944 NA 0.73 5th is commonly done, but I'd like to go further and swap in the 0.64 5th from the Audi 016, which is why I'm specifically trying to find an 016 with the 0.64 5th.

The .64 5th gear never came to the USA. .68 is the tallest USA spec gear available.

All just getting into my kit and have this transaxle. I know it's Audi, does anyone know specifics about ratios, and where does the clutch fork go and where can I get one? Also, anything to check out before I bolt this on and expect it to work well? And, what type of auto did this trans likely come out of. Thanks,

Doug, it's Audi 5000. Take a look at the .xls chart attached above - it gives you all the ratios. You can get the clutch fork through Audi or a german car auto wrecker.

It's worth replacing the output/input shaft seals and changing the gear oil before even considering doing anything with it. Make sure it doesn't feel "crunchy"
