Hi Mark, This might help i posted it back in 2006 Zuordnung Fahrzeug, MKB, GKB, AKB, MJ
if you do a search for dieselschrauber in the forum there are also other posts about the 01e, and the perferred models, the site i posted gives a lot of info but its in german but still sorta makes sense.

Graeme

Re: This 01E a "good" one to get?

Which car? Afaik it's only ever been used in the larger cars outside of Audi, skoda superb and I think vw passat.

Look it up on the parts catalogue on the vagcat forum. http://www.vagcat.com/epc/

Re: This 01E a "good" one to get?

Forget power. You can have a near infinite amount of power, it's torque that gearboxes are rated in. It makes a massive difference what engine you intend on using and where it makes its torque.
This is why the diesel boxes (while maybe not the best gearing) are ideal as they are designed to handle lots of torque.

The 01X is rated for 330Nm according to this post
Audi 01X transmission

No 2006 passat has a transverse engine/gearbox orientation.. 01X is a longitudinal gearbox.

Yes 01E come in 2WD.. However only the input shaft, first/2nd gears and the front and center cases are shared between the AWD and 2WD versions.

An AWD to FWD kit would be extremely expensive and you will be better off buying an entire gearbox. Pretty much any 6 speed Longitudinal Audi/VW/Skoda/SEAT made from 1998-2003 is an 01E.

However if you find a used on somewhere plan on spending some money to have the pinion bearing replaced and syncros changed, as many of the production boxes have problems with these.

To convert an AWD box to a 2wd box you will need:

Crown wheel and pinion gear
First gear bearing
Second gear bearing
3-6 gears
Pinion bearing
Rear Pinion shaft bearing
Rearmost housing
Various snap rings shims etc...
