Starter motor ring gear orientation

Hi all.

Im fitting some new flywheel ring gear onto a ford essex v6 flywheel. I have a geared essex starter motor.

Im not sure which orientation i should make the ring gear. I have 2 photos attached showing the both different sides, basically you will see a stronger flat ridge on one side of the teeth. Im not sure if this should be on the lhs of the tooth (as in the first pic) or the right. The starter gear turn's anti clockwise when viewed from the behind looking forward to the pinion. Could you have a look at the photos and tell me which photo represents the correct orientation ?
Basically which side should face the stater motor ??

many thanks!

Hi Jasonffice
The tooth profile in the first picture should be towards the pinion gear as it engages – otherwise why would they go to the extra effort of machining it

Did you sort out your slave cylinder you recently PM’d me about?

Hi Andy

Thanks for responding!. Firstly apologies for not responding to your private mail , i failed to spot you had sent a reply and since i have ordered a larger slave at the pedal end which has done the trick. Thanks so much for you offer though!.

As regards the gear, yes i guess that makes sense, to have the thicker flat side of the tooth toward the gear on the pinion that is acting upon it. I thought that the lean in of the tooth would help allow the pinion to disengage. So if the gear on the pinion is rotating anti clockwise the lead out angle of the tooth in picture 1 would help it disengage.
not obvious though! thanks for your thoughts
