996 gearbox lsd?

The Porsche 996(911). I think it is a Aisin sp6 transmission. Maybe these are not worthy. I keep finding a lot of them on Ebay for a reasonable price. I plan on running a 302 with 350 or less hp.

I recommend you familiarise yourself with the Porsche PET for the particular models you are chasing. <?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

The base 911 – 996 generation gearbox was made by Getrag and is a 6 speed cable shifted box.
The PET for the 996 should be this
http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/originalparts/usa/996_USA_KATALOG.pdf
the gearbox section starts on page 76 of the PDF.
Page 77 lists the gearbox assemblies as whole units. Note the 9th digit of “2” is the number that signifies if it was factory optioned with an LSD.This seems to be consistent across the range.

The Aisin box appeared in the 911-997 generation and was also a 6 speed cable shifted box.
The PET for the 997 should be this
http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/originalparts/en/E_997_KATALOG.pdf
again, going to page 64 shows that the 8th digit being a “2” signifies if it was fitted with the limited slip differential when it left the factory.

The latter gearboxes seem to have an issue with the bearings being sealed. They are supposed to be good for the life of the transmission however there have been some issues with the grease leaking out and the bearing overheating.

if you go to this vid you can see the uprated replacement bearing that people are installing at around the 3.10m mark

these are the same style of bearing that comes in the G50.

Given that you are going to pay extra for a LSD box, and you probably should be pulling it apart to replace the bearings anyway, I would be tempted to say it’s a better option to get a non LSD equipped box as it should have had an easier life. Pull it apart get the bearings replaced, re set the pinion adjustment so that its well forward on the crown wheel so that under load it can move back to its optimum clearance location and also install a new non worn lsd at the same time.

Also note that the starter motor on the 996 and 997 transmissions is on the engine side and not the gearbox side, so you need to find someone that can supply a gearbox adaptor, flywheel, clutch and starter motor package to suit your engine.
