IVA – Brake system Requirements

Following on from a previous posting on my build log (see below), I contacted the local IVA test station and they stated that if I turned up for the test with the re-usable type fitting on the aero-quip brake flexis on the car they would fail, as the design uses a sealing olive. However after I’d explained my interpretation of the wording, he understood my point of view, but would still require written confirmation from VOSA in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com</st1:City><st1:place w:st="on">Swansea</st1:place> to accept them.

Norfolk Tornado

From the definition in section 09D of the IVA manual: “Compression joints of the type using separate ferrules are not considered suitable for joints on hydraulic brake lines other than in the case of a hose designed for a high pressure application that incorporates an inner sleeve in the compression fitting”<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Having contacted VOSA, they have confirmed that this type of design is acceptable as: <o:p></o:p>
1) the design incorporates an inner sleeve<o:p></o:p>
2) the design of the hose and related fitting are designed for a high pressure application<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Overall, this has been a very pleasant experience in clearing this issue up. The inspector at Norwich is a kitcar enthusiast and couldn’t have been more helpful, giving me a few things I need to watch out for on the GT40 (headlamp height, fuel tank earths etc). They have tested various GT40’s and even had their own ‘cool wall’ of all the interesting cars they had tested. The contact they gave me at VOSA, again was very helpful and I have the confirmation in the form of an email. I presume that I can forward this to interested parties for reference if required.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Regards<o:p></o:p>

Hi Antony
So have I got an email from 9 years ago, I don't keep many from last week!

Re: IVA – Brake system Requirements

All is good then! I am in the process of readying my MDA for IVA..the main concern is braking. How do you (or is it trial and error) set the locked, welded and wired balance bar and set the front and rear braking ready for test...is witchcraft involved? All other areas are workable albeit somewhat a challenge but Hey..it has to be done to reach your dream :-)

Re: IVA – Brake system Requirements

Hi Mark,
Don't forget to fit the sticker about not messing with the setting of the balance bar (even though a new owner would have to un-weld it) and also the sticker regarding the brake fluid. They are really hot on small details like this now.

I'll leave it to others to give you some words of wisdom on setting the balance bar. No doubt access to a rolling road would be very helpful.
