Registration in So. Carolina?

Does anyone have experience in registering a GT40 in South Carolina?

My Superformance MK I will be ready soon, and I've heard conflicting stories; for example, I was told that SC was one of the few states that allowed short VIN numbers. Obviously that would be neat to have GT40P/2074 as the complete VIN number.

Also, I'm curious whether they are 'flexible' with respect to assigning a year to the car. My insurance company is agnostic on the matter; they're concerned with the purchase value, etc. Does the DMV look at the year it was built? The year of the car that is being replicated (as with some states)? The year the engine was built?

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Registration in So. Carolina?

Hello Kim,fficeffice" />

my 40 was registered in November with the short VIN.
They usually take the year the car replicates > in my case 1968.

There are a few tips on the following page:

http://www.dmv.org/sc-south-carolina/custom-built-cars.php#Homemade_Cars

All the forms you get here:

http://www.scdmvonline.com/dmvnew/forms.aspx

You will need at least the MSO (Manufacturer Statement of Origin) plus form 400 and 4038
http://www.scdmvonline.com/DMVNew/forms/400.pdf
http://www.scdmvonline.com/DMVNew/forms/4038%20Revised%206-13-03.pdf

Do you finish the car by yourself or do you have an engine installer finish it for you? If yes, who?
Any plans on registering it in SC?

I had my engine installer organize the titling of my car.

Regards from Charleston

Markus:

Wow! What a wealth of information; many thanks. The car is being prepared by Olthoff in NC, but I plan on leaving the car in South Carolina for the next couple of years.

I'll begin researching this in earnest with the leads you provided me. Was yours an SPF, and if so was the paperwork provided by them properly prepared to accomplish the short VIN and 1968 registration?

Viel Dank mein Freund!

Kim
