Cobra Owner/New Adventure=GT40 on the Horizon?

I rode in an original Cobra Drag Racer in 1965 when I was 12. Scared the you know what out of me. I dreamed that "someday" I would own a car like that. In 1972, when I was 20, I bought the same Cobra. As years past, I began to admire the looks of GT40's, and I remember telling myself.....next dream....to own a GT40 before I am 40. Well, so much for the math. But my dream is still the same. One day, I will own a GT40.

Although being at the right place and the right time has alot to do with alot of things in the world, I was at the right place and the right time to buy my Cobra. Now, I need to get back on track of turning my next dream car into reality.

I have visited this forum for a long time. I am amazed at the knowledge you folks have regarding the history and mechanics of these cars. I think it is just great!

So, I have set my eyes on what I believe will best suit my needs. My choice will be an ERA GT40, and it will be a right hand drive/right hand shift configuration, and the color.............RED!

Anyone wishing to hear more about my Cobra, chime on in. Anyone wishing to share their thoughts about my choice of a GT40, I would love to hear your comments. Especially anyone having a RHD/RHS car that drives it on the street.

Thanks everyone!

Welcom Gary!

The addiction of the GT40 is like alcohol!

Definitly post some pictures of the the Cobra in the Members Rides section or the Gallery. I think many folks would like a peek!

Re: Cobra Owner/New Adventure=GT40 on the Horizon?

Sandy,

Thanks. I tried to post some pics...I think 2 out of 4 got there.

I am not a computer genius, so your guys are gonna have to let me get warmed up to getting around here. I think about 2008 should do it.

If their are any others interested, I have my Cobra listed at:
www.cobra-ig.de
and you will have to click on Anzeigenmarkt and Fahrzeuge, and then look for CSX-2075.

Thanks, Gary

Gary, likely the image is too large (memory wise an image has a restriction)

Cool car, I have a 427 replica just about being done, but it is not as exciting as the GT40!

Re: Cobra Owner/New Adventure=GT40 on the Horizon?

Sandy,
Up to this point, I have only had an opportunity to sit in Tom Armstrongs P1033 once at the Portland Historics. Never have riden in a GT40. I had a Pantera for awhile, but I believe although similar in layout, a GT40 is far beyond a Pantera....and please, I mean no ill will for anyone owning a Pantera. At least before I bought the Cobra, I had a chance to ride in it.

With joining this group, I hope to meet GT40 owners in my area, or at least within a reasonable driving distance, so I can see their cars, ask questions, and MAYBE go for a ride.

Thanks, Gary

Re: Cobra Owner/New Adventure=GT40 on the Horizon?

Gary,

I just moved to Phoenix from Portland but had the luck to check out C&G Automotive before I left. Cary is the West Coast distributor for DRB and had two on site- one he's building for a customer and the other for himself. I'd recommend paying him a visit. He's in Canby, just south of the Aurora(?) airport, right off I-5. Depending on where you live, it's rather convenient.

Down in the SW there are a number of 40's but the only one I have seen/ridden in is Hersh's RF40. I know there are others around though and figure eventually I will connect with people.

Best of luck in your adventure. I've wanted one pretty much since I first saw one but never figured it'd be possible. It's getting closer and closer...

Chris

Re: Cobra Owner/New Adventure=GT40 on the Horizon?

Gary,

So many of us have marched the same path, my friend... including being a lurker on the forum for a goodly period of time - so, yes, you're in good company.

I don't know what you figure to be 'reasonable driving distance' but, if Seattle is close enough, there's Neal and Cliff with their finished high-end replicas in the general area (check them out in the gallery), or maybe Colin who'se right at the Canadian border and just a few hours beyond OR (give me until next summer) you could swing by our place and check out the RCR.

Of course, you could always ring up the Armstrongs when you're in town... they're local, you know!

Welcome to the group,

T.

Re: Cobra Owner/New Adventure=GT40 on the Horizon?

Chris K: Wow! a 6R4. That must have been an experience!.....and Mt. climbing>>>>>>> Not me! Now my son, he would be right behind you. He works for Acme Scenic and Display here in Portland. He originally did all the concerts here in Portland/Seattle area, and hung all the lights and sound equipment for all the big name groups....which meant he did alot of climbing up and down the back stage area. Best thing about it, I got all the great T-Shirts he got from all his gigs. Now, he is into being a project manager, so the T-Shirt deal has dried up. Bummer. I have some great (and probably collector) T-shirts from those times!

Carry Gressinger is a great guy by the way. Before he started doing GT40's, he was a Cobra guy. I have been to his shop, and let me tell you, he has one hell of a place. The pictures on his walls are enough to justify the visit, and he is always helpful to answer questions and help in any way he can. Anyone that can take the time to visit his shop will be in for a great experience!

Dutton: I live in a small town southeast of Portland, about 33 miles out. It takes me about 2 1/2 hours to get to the south part of Seattle (and you know that is always driving the speed limit, right? Well, that is at least using my brain fade-o-meter.....detector...er....whatever). So the Seattle area and up to the Canadian Border is well within what I would do to get better aquainted with GT40 folks. My wife and I just did a round trip that included the Port Angeles to Victoria to Vancouver and back to PDX loop. It was a great trip, and I said the next one will be in a GT40.

So again, anyone that would like to offer some advise about GT40's, the construction, things to do, things not to do, or anything else inbetween, please let me know.

I so appreciate everyones response. Thanks again,

Gary

Re: Cobra Owner/New Adventure=GT40 on the Horizon?

Hi Gary,

Welcome. As Monsieur Dutton mentioned, there are a few GT40 guys in the NW - myself, Tim (Dutton) and Neal included. All friendly nice guys (if I do say so myself). If you plan on coming to the Seattle area then give me a ping with a couple days notice and I'll be happy to show you my car (CAV) and we can go for a ride.

You're going to love driving a good GT40...

Re: Cobra Owner/New Adventure=GT40 on the Horizon?

CliffBeer: Appreciate the offer. My wife and I make trips to Seattle and hit Pike Street and the Warf every so often. This weekend, I will be out with some friends on our boat. But I will give some serious thought to a trip to Seattle about two weeks out.

Not sure where in Seattle you are located, but we can decide on where to meet and a time, and I will be there.

Thanks, Gary
