Re: Hello Everyone and please help

Jordan,

Some (more) advice.
Get into cars, understand about buying and selling. Buy something small that needs some work, do the work and sell it on for a small profit. Plough the money back into the next car and so on. This is something you can do in your spare time while still holding down a job/studying. It'll take a while, but before too long, you'll be driving around in something worth quite a bit of money. Sell it, and buy a kit and another cheap car. That way your kit will have "cost" you nothing! keep going and you'll get enough to build a complete car. NOT a quick and easy route, but a sure and steady accumulation of the neccesary funds.
Best of luck
Simon

Re: Hello Everyone and please help

Hi Jordan

One thing I have always lived my life by is that nothing worthwhile comes easily.

" Happy are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make them come true "

Dream the dream and pay the price and you will enjoy.

All the best

Dimi

Jordon

I think the advice you have been given is sound.
The one thing I think has been over looked is your skill levels.
You stated you are going into the panel industry I am presuming panel beater.

I am a motor mechanic by trade.
I started racing at 18 but could not afford it so I started making my own parts.
As you do this you accumulate equipment , welders a lathe hand tools ect ect.
As time goes by your skill levels go up, dont be afraid to do courses ,welding ,machining,One that I find very important is learn how to use a CAD system as this will allow you to design your parts be able to hand or email someone a drawing so they can make it for you.
You will find that you will sell those skills and make things for other people from time to time but don't give it away.

Ask questions ,how did you make that , why did you do it that way , how does it work.
Never be embarrassed to ask, I am 46 this year and as I have asked a lot of questions and I am never embarrassed about it.
Read books.
Look at pictures.

What this is all getting to Jordon is you can cut the cost of the build if you tackle things yourself.
Yes it takes longer but I for one enjoy that side of it also it controls the speed at which the money is spent as you have other things in your life to deal with as Ian Anderson has stated.

I purchased a chassis and body of RF and have built everything else.
I think I paid $23.000 and could have been less , doing it again I would have built my own chassis and I paid for stuff I never used but that is part of the education.

Someone made mention starting your own business is the way to go.
For me that has been the case I have had a service workshop for 25 years and it has given way more than I could ever have got working for someone.

One day you will have a wife Jordon and you will need a garage to escape to.

Jim

Re: Hello Everyone and please help

Hi Jordan

The one thing you can do that will cost minimal money but repay you with a wealth of experience that can otherwise take years to learn is to get an old bomb of a car and a workshop manual for that car and totally dismantle it and reassemble it.

In that way you get to know how a car is put together and how the pieces function together.

From that point on all cars are basically the same with the only minimal differences between makes and components used.

Any mistakes you make will not be hugely expensive and will provide a major learning curve for you.

Building a GT40 is not that difficult if you have the basic understanding of how all the individual parts work and must come together.

Some skills you can develop and some things that require specialised skills can be farmed out but the more you can do yourself the more costs you can save but one of the most important skills is knowing when to do something yourself and when to give it to those that have the specialised knowledge or tools to do the job correctly.

If you have the drive and the correct frame of mind you will succeed at whatever you set for yourself.

You have already taken the best step you can by getting involved with this forum as the wealth of knowledge here is second to none.

All the best

Dimi
