GT40 5.4 TT new member

Hi all,

My name is Theron from Cape Town, South Africa. I purchased a replica GT40 about 3 years back. The car was built for a man who allegedly could not fit in the cockpit so he decided to sell. I eventually learned that the car had been constructed very poorly so I stripped her to redo.

I have since sold the 302 motor & dumped the Citroen transaxle. I had a mate of mine import the 5.4 Intech modular Ford motor. I have just managed to secure an 01E transaxle. I have also brought in two T4 garrets with .63 exh. I had the software done by Western Motorsports in Canada. Its the EM-5 SDS. They supplied the loom as well.

I'm a keen drag racer here in Cape Town. I want to build this car to compete in some of the more serious 1/2 mile (800m) standing start top-speed events.

I intend getting the car ready for the end of this year. The engine will need to be torn down & assembled with forged rods & pistons. I don't intend going for silly HP numbers just a usable 800-900 hp.

Any information & ideas will be sincerely appreciated!

Theron.

Welcome ! I suggest you re think the trans, as an 01E will end in tears quickly
A 930 Porsche Trans with optimal ratios or G50/52 would be my starting point

I believe Scott has someone running one of his with 750 or so and it is pretty reliable, but I believe he did mention they blew one up once on a missed shift.

800-900 though, yes, that's probably too much to handle at least in stock form. I had mine cryo treated and it runs straight cut first and second gears to handle the 500 or so rear wheel horsepower I intend to have in it as I was worried about a stock one even handling that much.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the input. I understand the transaxle concerns & agree with you. The issue I had is that there is no Porsche transaxles available. The only 930 transaxle I could get hold of was in pieces. There is also no transaxle specialists locally. I have read every post on here with regards to the 01e & believe that if I really take good care, fit a Wavetrac LSD & really just launch softly I can make this trans last. I didn't purchase the 01e because it was cheap or available! It took 2 yrs to find & the guy wouldn't drop a cent on the 10 grand(zar) asking price. I first purchased the 012 but I then after inspecting it decided it would disintegrate on startup!

I will start to post up the pics as we gain momentum. I need you guys to advise me on the adapter. I want to run the triple ex-nascar pack clutch. Is there a vendor here that can help?

Kind Regards
Theron

A guy (Eric at Kit Car Chassis) who lives about an hour from me and has experience with the modular Fords to 01E might be able to help. He is going to be building my adapter soon. He may be able to help you out and is a member here I believe.

Yes. An Aluminator 5.0 with Cobra Jet intake (have it setting in the other room collecting dust) and probably some head work with Comp Cams Stage 2 Coyote camshafts. Should produce over 500 RWHP with that set up. Not sure about the head work and camshafts just yet though. May just stick with the Aluminator with Cobra Jet intake. Dyno results I've seen of that show RWHP to be about 450 or so with this sort of exhaust so still not too shabby.
