Chassis: GT40P/1046

Chassis GT40P/1046 Chassis 1046 was a brand new car built specifically for the eight-car assault on the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. Entered by Shelby American and piloted by 'Kiwis' Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon, it finished the race in second but was classified as the winner because it had started further down the grid than the sister that crossed the line first. Holman & Moody subsequently fielded the car in the 1967 Daytona 24 Hours. A gearbox failure resulted in an early retirement. Ford first Le Mans winner was sold soon after and has been in private hands ever since. It is seen at the 2006 Le Mans Classic where the 40th anniversary of the historic win was celebrated, together with the second and third placed cars. 1046 reportedly changed hands recently for around $10 million.

Several of us on this forum had the unique opportunity to be on the track at the same time as this car at the historic races held at Road America a few years back. This was taken on the false grid just prior to the start of the "GT40 only" session. It was cool to be gridded next to such an important piece of history.
