New GT40 owner/member from Australia

Gidday to all GT40 owners and admirers, my name is Phill and I live and work in the Pilbara region of the North West of Western Australia, the nearest city is Perth some 1550km south, the region is dry and very hot for 9 months of the year and hot for the other 3 months, this region is the biggest iron-ore producing area in the world, I have been driving trains for the past 38 years (I was 15yo when I joined the railways) and am currently supervising the Train Drivers. Our iron-ore trains consist of 236 wagons, are 2.4km long and weigh 30'000tonnes fully loaded. I have been a "car nut" for as long as I can remember, I bought my first car a month after I started working and 3 months before I could get a Drivers Licence at age 16, I have always loved V8's especially Fords, my current ownership consists of a genuine 1971 Ford XY GT 351C 4sp, a 1972 350 4sp Corvette Stingray(Milli-Miglia Red), all original Australian built 1977 Ford P6 LTD (Lincoln Type Design)351C Auto in factory Black and finally the pinacle of my desires is a circa 2000 Australian "Roaring Forties" factory built GT40 Mk1 replica in Vermillion Fire(Ford colour orange-red and same colour as my XY GT), I'm now happy to have joined the GT40 community. cheers Goges

Hi Phill,

I’m in Melbourne but have been in Railway Signalling for the last 10 years now and work for Jacobs Consulting in infrastructure/rail area. I’m fairly certain we have supply agreements with Rio and teams operating in the Pilbra and Perth. Let me know it there is anything you need help with when it comes to signalling or rail in general and I can get someone from the team on it, I.E bridges track alignment or any of the other civil stuff.

Regards Ryan

Thanks John, the 72 Vette is all original and was imported from San Diego a few years ago, I then purchased from the private importer and shipped it to the other side of Oz.
The Ford XY GT is a genuine GT re-imported back into Oz from South Africa in 2008
During the late 60's early 70's Ford Australia exported cars to SA in CKD form (Car Knock Down) and were re-assembled in their Ford plant at Port Elizabeth, they are called Falcons in Oz but were called Fairmonts in SA due to the bad reputation the Canadian imported Falcons at the time had, it appeared that the Canadian Falcons could not handle the rough road conditions in SA, Ford SA decided that the Oz built Fords were better suited to SA roads hence the deal to import from Oz with the name change.
This particular car (pictured 65E) was imported back into Oz by a businessman who owns a Die Cast Model car making business(Icon Models),specialising in 1/8 scale models of Australia's iconic XW and XY Falcon GT's,the intention was to promote his business by commissioning a complete nut and bolt rebuild and paint it to replicate a famous race car here in Oz driven by a motoring ledgend called Alan Moffat to win Oz's greatest race called the Bathurst 1000 in 1971.
To win the 1/1 scale car you had to purchase one of 600 built, 1/8 scale model for $1295AUD, then inside the box, fill out and return a coded entry form that required the purchaser to write in 25 words or less where you would take the car if you won it, and why, for anyone who knows me I'm "got the gift of the gab" so I came up with a poem and sent it back, a day after my 50th birthday celebrations I received a call telling me I'd won the car valued at $100k. The GT40 is my latest ambition come true and arrived just before Xmas, hopefully in many miles to come, I will now be able to die a contented man.

Nice cars Phill!

I think it is true... He who dies with the most toys, wins!!!

Nice, collection.
Is there a reason why they are all red?
Yes, I believe all fast looking cars should be Red (stand on the side of the road and see which coloured cars stand out the most, in my mind it's Red s and Yellows), all big classic LTD type cruisers should be Black and mass produced cars White or Silver.
Both the XYGT and the GT40 are not a coincidence colour wise, when I saw this GT40 for sale, part of the attraction was not only the price but the Ford factory colour of Vermillion Fire which is the same colour as the XYGT.
I hope to retire in 6-7 years (if all goes well?),the plan is to paint a car-trailer in the same colour, put the GT40 on the back and tow it behind the XYGT, then cruise to any location of interest (club track days or holiday destinations around Oz) and then enjoy driving both when we get to where we are going.cheers Goges

Thanks Ryan, Rio have a number of long term contractors working in the field, FRS maintains our track and associated infrastructure, Speno maintains/monitors rail condition and Calibre/Ansaldo are associated with signalling and major rail projects, we are currently advancing with driverless trains called AutoHaul™, there is still much R&D to do before Drivers are removed, however field testing is showing that it will be done eventually, it will be amazing to watch a 30k tonne iron-ore train roll past for 2.4km long....with no Driver on-board..!

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply, there should be a photo or two on the forum now.
What part of the Cape are you at/doing?
Not sure if I'm correct? but I noticed on other parts of this forum that you did your own build?
If so well done, I appreciate those who have the nouse and skill to start and finish any project like building a car.
There is an old bloke in the latest Unique Cars mag that has bulit a 5/8 scale replica of a 1925 Sunbeam Tiger complete with a hand made 800cc V12 including hand cut gears....a genius in my books and I hope he has someone younger to share his skills with for the future.
The GT is currently getting a small paint touch up done in Karratha, this was needed thanks to the car carrying skills of CEVA,some how they managed to rub off some paint at the edge of the front clip, below the Ford badge, none of the panel shops up here wanted to quote for the job due to CEVA's reputation for late or non payment, anyway I managed to get Prescision Collision in Karratha to start on it last week.
I will think hard about using CEVA again, simply because if the car is badly damaged in someway during transit to Karratha, there is no Panel shops up here willing to quote.
In the meantime theres always fishing while I'm waiting to get it back.
cheers Goges
