I recently learned (from the current owner) that my earlier post contained a few inaccuracies. The car was actually completed in 1980, not 1984, and Brian Barnes paid low $300K for it, not $200K.
And I'd still love to own it!!!!

If you know the new owner, have him join the forum and post pictures of his new toy. I'm sure a lot of us would love to see pictures of it.

Rep Power: 2 | Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay Just to bring matters up to date: GT40P/1086 is still in the US and is currently on sale. The present dollar/euro exchange rates make classic cars such as 1086 particularly attractive to European buyers, of course, so this car could well go to Europe. There are more details and some new pictures of the car to be found on GT40 for sale - 1086. |

The short answer to your query is 'no'. The originality of the car (absolutely as new, with only a few thousand miles), its ultimate specification (carbon fiber bodywork from new, one of only a few GT40s so-equipped), and the fact that it has never been crashed (the overwhelming majority of GT40s have some crash damage in their history, and some are like grandfather's axe, with little more than the VIN tag dating back to Slough in the 1960s) lead him to believe that this is the absolutely pinnacle of GT40-hood, and thus the car is priced accordingly, with an asking price higher than any other GT40 I've ever heard of, not in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but rather in the millions.
As the dollar continues to crash against foreign currencies, this might not be as far-fetched as it sounds. After all, if you get paid in Euros or Pounds, what do you care how many dollars something costs? You will just convert that imaginary figure into your own currency and then decide from there. Basically, assuming the asking price of this car remains fixed over time, and the dollar continues to plummet, this car just keeps getting cheaper every day to the Europeans, and eventually (presumably) somebody will buy it.
(I wish I had bought it when it was offered to me for just over $200K, which was about $197K more than I had at the time!)

Rep Power: 2 | Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay The asking price now is a long way from the highest I have ever heard of. 1084 was sold very recently, and that was EXPENSIVE. Admittedly, it had a racing history (just 2 races, including Le Mans) but that was why it sold for so much.
All things are relative, and bearing in mind that 1086 is one of that select group of genuine Abbey Panels-tubbed cars, in tip-top condition, I am not in the least bit surprised it isn't cheap. The price asked for it a few years ago is, in my view, irrelevant. I was once offered a Cobra 289 for $2,000, but I don't expect to pick one up for that in 2008; as the saying goes "that was then, this is now". |

Rep Power: 5 | Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay Someone step in here if they know otherwise, but as I understand it (questionable), becasue this car was originally in the UK, there would be no requirement to pay VAT (17.5%) if the car was repatriated???

P1084/P1004 did have a history it also in its early form toured with the 1965 Shelby Caravan. And Like the first Ferrari 330P4 (a P3 buck) it was an offical 1968 Gulf car as P1084. It was also according to John Horsman the last GT40 made at Slough.
So History is everything !!

| Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay Mark - That may not be the case. I know from an incident at Luton Airport that I was charged duty on landing excess Champagne which was taken on a flight from London Gatwick down as far as Nice and was left over in the bars on the aeroplane when I arrived back in Luton. It was in fact Duty Paid when it was boarded at Gatwick but because it had 'gone foreign' duty became liable again. Now that was pre EEC but there may be a similarity. If this car has been away from the UK for more than 3 years it would not be exempt under 'returning goods'. Because such a car is more than 15 yrs old and 'has not been substantially modified such as brakes, steering , and Engine' (GET MY DRIFT) it may be liable to Import Duty and then 5% instead of 17.5% VAT that would be levied if it had been modified. There is a phone number for Customs who will give you some ideas. - 01702 366077. Don't give them my regards.
It's a minefield believe me. They've got a rule for every conceivable avenue and thing.
and Ps - there is no such thing as 'excess' Champagne.........

Rep Power: 1 | Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay Hello all, Brian Barnes here. I am the one who sold P1086 that this post talks about (hey Mike D, how's it going?). I sold this car, not off of e-bay, a few years ago (5) to a gentleman in Washington State. He then, with my help, sold it to the current owner- and the new buyer burned me on the referral fee to help make the sale happen. This owner has been trying to sell the car for the past 4 years, always ahead of the curve in his asking price. It is a nice car, but does not have history. I bought it to run the Historic's like Monterey, but was told the lack of history at that time disqualified it to race. This was one of several reasons that I sold the car. He has been calling me asking what the car is worth...and my response is what I was taught years ago...what the next idiot will pay for it...the true value of everything in life. I personally don't think it is worth much more than he paid for it...which I promised him I would not disclose. Brian |

It's nice to have some genuine facts from somebody who was directly involved and knows what he's talking about, interjected into this discussion which otherwise consists almost exclusively of conjecture, and hazy memories (mine especially!)
