Rep Power: 5 | Wanted 1966 Alan Mann GT40 Racecar photos I own the first Alan Mann aluminum GT 40 racecar. I need to obtain 1966 vintage race / racecar pictures to help me in making details correct in my GT. When the car was at Holman-Moody, some slight modifications were performed. I want to be able to return this racecar back to its original configuration as it was at the 1966 LeMans test days event. The car has always been red with gold stripes, it was #16 at LeMans test days. It was also at Sebring in 1966 as #25. If this GT was at more events, I am not aware of it. Any pictures at all will likely be of great help. Even a photo that shows a small portion of the underbody mechanical areas, interior or outside may be invaluable to returning the car to its 1966 race trim. Pictures of the sister car from 1966 may also be of help.(it ran #15 LeMans and #24 Sebring) I have talked with Alan Mann, and this conversation was no help. I have also heard that at least 5 sets of aluminum body panels had been produced, but I can not confirm this statement. So there is a possibility that other cars may be configured with aluminum bodywork. I do know that all of the aluminum bodywork on my GT is original. |

I think AM GT1 ran #25 at Sebring with Whitmore and Gardner at the wheel and #16 at the Le Mans trials with the same drivers. The car did not compete after that. After changing hands a few times - I think Holman & Moody owned it two or three times - the car was restored, but stolen and destroyed when it was crashed at speed. I heard the bodywork was totaled. Has it been restored since?
I think that AM GT2 was the car that ran #15 LeMans and #24 Sebring and went on to many more races through to 1970 (Hill/Stewart/Hawkins, etc). This was originally red and gold, then went to blue and later red when Paul Hawkins raced it.
Apart from a few people on this forum who may be better placed to speak about aluminium cars than myself , have you spoken with Jim Rose who worked on the Alan Mann cars? I can contact Jim if you are interested.
Cheers and good luck.

Rep Power: 7 | Re: Wanted 1966 Alan Mann GT40 Racecar photos Hi, Rex! Don't tell me that you're finally conceding defeat in our unofficial contest for the longest time that an original GT40 has been apart awaiting restoration? My #1040 is into its 22nd year now of DIG (Dead In Garage) condition. I figured you and I were going to go head to head until we were both too old to remember what those piles of pieces in the garage actually were. Hope to see you--and your car--at the Shelby Club convention in Michigan in July. I may bring #1040's tub for the conversation piece that it always is. |

You are right - after an exchange of emails with Rex earlier today it appears that this is more than likely his AM car from 1966.
Cheers

Chris, Thanks so much for your entries with the pictures. As when posting pictures on the internet, details can be lost. Is it possible for you to make up some 8" x 10" prints of the first three pictures and mail them to me ?? I will glady pay for your efforts and any costs involved too. Thanks Again. |

| Ron, you got me beat by around 12 years! The last time my #1040 moved under its own power was around 1981. With Rex's capitulation, I thought I had the contest locked up, but it turns out I wasn't even close. With the resto of Rex's car now begun, and I think a decent chance of work starting on my #1040 this year, you may be able to claim the trophy--a dubious honor, sir! I wonder what other long-dormant original 40s are lurking out there? Perhaps the mystery #110 or one of the first big-block cars (#106/#107, if one of them actually survived)? Also, Gil Jackson in NY may have a car or two eligible for the "DIG (Dead In Garage) for Two Decades and Still Counting" contest. Would be neat to get a head count of these dormant survivors. |

Rep Power: 7 | Re: Wanted 1966 Alan Mann GT40 Racecar photos Dear Forum I Hope to have my DHB Regestered in August 2004
Then I will be full speed ahead on 1041 and finish it as I now have all the items required to complete it.I would like to thank all the people around the world that have helped to find all the bits and pieces that I needed. All the trade school teachers that have put-up with teaching me the finer points. BUT I AM NOW READY. Photos of both soon.
Thanks for the intrest shown as I am so far away from you all.
Yours in OZ Ron Rowse |
