Some old GT40 ads

Hey guys, I'm new around here. I've decided to kick off my contributions to this forum with some old ads for original GT-40s in various publications from the past. If anybody knows of more selling prices of GT-40s pre-1989, please share!

More to come!

Greg

Part 2

I didn't mean for the first one to come out so small. It's #1055 with 5000 orig. mi. It was listed in Hemmings Motor News Nov. 1974 and the price was $20,000 firm.

Ha! Excellent! Can you send me those ads if you have the time? I'll PM you with my email address. Do you have any old cobra/ferrari/porsche ads as well? If you do, maybe we can arrange some kind of swap, because I have endless sports car ads, mostly from the 70s, but a few from the 60s.

15K was indeed alot of $ in 71. I've heard that an original Ferrari 250GTO sold for $5800 that year. Funny that the GT40 at $1.5M today is not much over 1/20th the going rate of a Ferrari GTO.

I called up the guy selling the ex-Hawkins AM GT40 and said I'd take it for $80,000 - he said the car was no longer for sale unfortunately. Bummer, that was a good deal.

I had the pleasure of meeting the person that owned the Wilmett Coupe and several original GT40s which Mike Trusty (fellow SPF MK II owner) restored or worked on and asked him if he had regretted selling them and of course you know the answer. Its funny how many of the original cars ended up in Arkansas including #1075. One of the people who helped in the service of them is the person who set my cars suspension, he told me had the Alan Man lightweight in his garage for 8 years and drove it when ever he wanted because the owner didn't have room for it. Lucky bugger.

I dunno..... 80k for a car is alot today, and 80k for a car in 1978 was jaw-droppingly, astronomically expensive. I think all of the ads reflected the market, if not above the market. I have an article from 1979 somewhere that states someone purchased a solid unrestored road model for $48,000 in October 1978 . A Ferrari 250 GTO was bought that same month and year for $96,000, but a MK IV was probably already above 100k! The race model GT40s did tend to be in the $75k range at the time though.

I do think the one offered for $90,000 in HMN 5/84 was definitely a bargain for the time.

Greg, yes, you're right, $80K is a lot for a car today and that was a princely sum in 1978. However, if one were to do the math to figure out the rate of return of a $80K investment in 1978 yielding perhaps $2.0MM today (rough value of an original GT40 with race history) it would undoubtedly be a very healthy return. Hindsight is 20/20....

Found some more...

Remember, if anybody else has any old ads, don't bogart them! Post/scan them or at least quote them!

That 'GT40' colletti gearbox (HMN 12/1979) sure looks wrong for $80000 is it an early kit car?
I know in 1973 when the Israli Arab war hit the oil supplies that an original GT40 was offered for £3500.
Some where I have the 1966 advert for the MK! road car at around £7500 it did state you could buy X amount of Cortinas etc for the price.
And do not forget the three 1966 Shell cars at Monza were offer for sale for £1500 each as it would cost more to ship them home!!!
Regards Allan

Only if I new then what I know now....what an investment that would have been...I enjoyed the ad's and welcome to the forum

I paid £4600 for 1005 in it's original state in 1971. In todays money that is X 17

Here waiting for the orange stripes to be filmed for a Gulf Oil ad for TV

My Friend Karl Richardson (RIP) paid £2500 for GTO/3869GT in 1966.
He had a new Ford #1014 as well.....my brother(RIP) went with him to collect from John Wyer in Slough. If I recall he paid £5500 for it.....£1000 discount.

Greg, thank you again, I really enjoy reading those in between my tear episodes. Hipperson, tell us some stories, do you still have it?

JH............had it 4 years and sold it to Indy driver Salt Walther for £17,000.
That was circa 1976..it was destroyed in Walthers garage by 'fire'

Many years later, like Lazarus, it rose from the ashes and has been the subject of controversy ( esp. on this forum) ever since
