P1085

There is a short article in this month's Motorpsort magazine which says Ford GT40 chassis 1085 took to a race circuit for the first time ever at Donington Park in April. Owner Jonathan Turner bought the 1969 chassis, which had been stored in America and never used, and had it built up by Racing Fabrications.

The article says it was the last GT40 chassis to be numbered and was shipped to the US for Gil Jackson who already had 1009. 1085 then sat in a crate with a complete set of parts for 40 years!

The article says Ronnie Spain has verified the car having known the existence of the chassis for many years.

Blimey!

Re: P1085

Having known Gill Jackson since the early 80s and sold him many parts it was sad to see his 2 Gt40s and 2 Cobras go, but at least they will finaly get finished and run again. I was there when the parts were sorted out for the sale of 1085 and had never seen so many original GT40 parts in 1 place that were not bolted on a car. This is a great story but the stories in the UK magazines are not too accurite as Gill never owned a porsche let alone a 917.

Re: P1085

Jay, you are right. When i first saw the car in pieces, it was like finding the Holy Grail.
There were several key period items missing and i felt honoured to find them for the builder, Ian. Below are posted photos of the finished article.
Of special interest to us, is probably the rear clip photo. It appears to be an unused Gulf clip and it shows early use of carbon fibre. I wonder how many of those still exist.

Andy,
Will you post those pictures in the gallery. They are too good to be lost in the threads.

A question about the last numbered GT40:

I thought that GT40 P1086 was the last chassis? GT40P/1086 is numbered and appears in a couple of books if I am not mistaken. Was GT40P/1086 assembled from spares at some point?

Re: P1085

My understanding is 1085 was the last chassis given a serial number by FORD and 1086 was given a number by JW automotive and finished for a family member. 1086 is a very unique car as it was assembled with a new boss 302 engina as thats what ford was selling new at that time. 1086 also has all the light weight gulf style bodywork but no hartwell latches. Oh and it is for sale.
