Donnie and Arlen of course were not the first guys
to change pieces on motorcycles. But they were inovators
of the custom business back in the late 60's early 70's.. They made parts like front ends, frames and a meriad of smaller parts. That was the beginning of the hobby. Now there are so many parts even guys like me can get involved. Harley motorcycles were notorious for leaking and a lot
of the early builders used the famous Honda 750 and Kawasaki
Z900. But the Harley has always been the favorite American motor. 70's were a perfect time to grow the industry especially all the crazy colors. There were a lot of small garage businesses but most fell by the wayside. A few kept quality and invention as a priority. They are the ones who survived. Now with a renissance in bikes today there is again a meriod of builders. But only the best will survive.
I am a little scatter brained to stick to one occupation but for now the bikes have my interest. The GT40 hopefully will be in my near future. Starting a new business is tough. You really have to be commited and be in for the long run. Even if everyone else looses faith you have to stick it out. Just like all the guys here. Everyone told me even Donnie that I was on the wrong track but I had planned well and felt completly confident that this project would turn out great. Now Donnie and his crew feel this is one of the best bikes he has ever built. Makes me feel great.
To me it was just for fun. But sometimes that is they way to approach something like this. Go with your instincts.
Here is a picture of one of the builders greg. He is so envolved and so fun to be around. He works on the bikes like their his own. I swear he pets them. He has a bike in his head and has been buying parts for a couple of years. I
Thanks for letting me share my project on your site. It all started because I asked if anyone could tell me the name and of the color yellow used on the GT40.
Everyone gave me advice. It was great. Hope I can get to work on a gt40 in the near future. I have a good crew to help me. All of you.
