Re: Porche flat 12\'s for sale

I read about this somewhere - maybe here? Apparently these engines went "missing" some while ago and then turned up in a classified ad on Renlist. As I understand it, they had been stolen, the authorities got involved in the recovery, and now the sale is legitimate and the funds will be directed to the original owner or his estate.

$1M + for a few Porsche engines makes you appreciate the fact that Ford won LeMans with a production-block-based lump, eh?

I think they are all now sold, the auction for charity raised over 1 million.

Re: Porche flat 12\'s for sale

Mark, I too appreciate the rather simple mass production engine design of the GT 40.
On the other hand, Porsches unconditional committment to excellence displayed by these
sophisticated 180 degree V12`s made the GT 40 look like being glued to the tarmac next
to a 917...

Re: Porche flat 12\'s for sale

Marcus

The 917 is a newer more developed race car...so I'd expect it to out perform the GT40.

However the Gt40 was a true "street legal" car and many owners did and still do drive them happily on the street. The 917 and all later Lemans winners were no longer dual purpose vehicles. So a chapter in motorsport racing really ended with the GT40.

Re: Porche flat 12\'s for sale

Agreed, BUT as we have noted in another thread, Porsche professionalism is not always evident. The single most compelling evidence of this is their abject failure at designing an F1 engine for Lola in the early-mid 90's.This was at the change over to high revving pneumatic valve lift engines when the Porsche offering was massively overweight and underpowered. A change in technology that Porsche failed to master.
