Rep Power: 6 | World Cup Thread Well chaps, its nearly upon us. That 4 yearly occasion where some of us get carried away, some of us are realistic and the rest say ' whats all the fuss about!!'
To our cousins on the other side of the pond, this is the game the rest of the world plays. Soccer i believe you named it.
Any of you going to Germany?
Ive friends who have optimistically shelled out for tickets to a semi final, are they deluded fools?
Being part Scots and with no realistic hope of qualifying, im fully behind England. But i have to say, im not fully convinced this team is playing much better as a unit than that which went to Korea/Japan in 2002. I sincerely hope they sort out the Gerrard/ Lampard situation.
Well, with the recent weather, ill be darting in from out of the garden and BQ and trying to catch as much of it as i can.
Happy viewing . |

Rep Power: 15 | We Australians will be paying a little more attention to it than usual seeing that we have finally fielded a team that has qualified. A friendly game was played here in Melbourne between the Socceroos (the Australian team) and the European champions recently and it drew a crowd of nearly 100,000 spectators. This was quite a phenomenon for a city of 2 million that normally considers soccer a lowly 4th or 5th in crowd attraction. I’m not yet convinced that it’s the most exciting sport in the world, but I will be watching it all anyway.
Incidentally, as I understand it, the term “soccer” was created by the Brits and was a bastardized abbreviation of the term “Football AsSOCiation” (if we are to believe the commentary during the above friendly game).

Rep Power: 11 | Nope no flags on my car.
a few friends are heading out to watch all the qualifiers. They've gone a bit crazy, brought new st George flag crash helmets (going on bikes) , flags on the panniers, handlebars, basically anywhere where one will stay put !
One is having his hair dies too...
They couldn't get tickets so are going to Munich etc and watching it on big screens outside the stadium, which seems to be far more popular than I'd thought. Apparently the england supporters association are laying on all sorts of things like this in each of the places.
I dunno what all the fuss is about - its only a game
