Rep Power: 27 | I've started my Italian gt40... in 1/24 scale
After my last thread about wide bodies and looking at all those nice kits I have here I finally started to make my own geetee (Doc..u gave me the input....and Ron definitely killed me with the thread about new spf mk.1..damn..).
I will update this thread with all my pictures of the work in progress.
I choosed finally the big ass Gulf 1075 Fujimi Kit,and have to admit the fitting is not so perfect as i expected (so far away from last Tamiya kits) .
The painting will be in gulf livery and when (or IF...)finished I will dedicate the model to my friends all here inside .
I also have the studio 27 PE parts, still dunno If i will use that or not, because looking carefully at it I think they dont have so many great details as I expected.
The Fujimi body is nice but is divided in 2 parts not fitting so good between.
I always start my models from the body (istruction sheets usually wants u to start from chassis or engine).
If the body is ok and finished as I want i go on...if different we will see.. .
Also dunno why Fujimi provides the front radiator air intake completely closed and so I immediately open that with a razor blade, and will replace the net inside with something really better (dont really need the Studio 27 pe part for that.... a metal fine net is enough..)
....second part coming soon

Rep Power: 27 | Re: I've started my Italian gt40... eheh Doc, for the first one I am assembling I would like to keep all closed to feel the pleasure of its shape
and here enclosed are some pictures of the gulf livery done by me.
Fujimis decals are very good looking ones, just maybe they become too fragile when u try work on theme.
The Gulf livery itself needs (obviously) u paint part of theme, and so u have to cover part of decals already placed with some tape.
That was the main problem..cause also using the most delicate adhesive tape...u anyway will delete some decals form their side....and can happen u als seriously damage theme.
I was quite lucky, just damaged some black lines on roof and front bumper, and so replaced with fine black stripes done by myself.
Probably the using of Gunze sangyo Mark softer helps also.
Another big problem was to fing a "real" azure gulf for the livery.
Inside decal sheets they suggest to use no. 45 of gunze acrylic range...and I did it......but the result on the model was exactly ex Simon Winter blue (Simon..u wellknow I loved that blue now in france and was tempted to make a clone of your old car....
I deleted all, keep an h45 and add a full pure white H1 mixing theme, and so finally I had a good looking Gulf blue( I use as referring color the ones of the already finished geetees I have here for sale).
I also started to make some painting tests on alloy wheels (unfortunately for me I deeply love black wheels cars...maybe better if flat black ..but this is a 1075..and seems that had orange ones.).
Now my documentation lacks a little...I saw some nice gulf ones have a rear metal spoiler(and really wider wider wheels..)...dunno if 1075 had this.
...going on working right now

Looks good but I have a question on the door handles - they don't look correct for GT - perhaps 1075 had something different
anyone know?

Rep Power: 27 | Re: I've started my Italian gt40... oh yes...that model is really impressive O_o so many many details (I am not at that levl honestly .
Just a shame I noted too later 1075 use to have only one fuel cap filler (and I leaved 2 ones ).
Means mine one is a gtd ...
Wider wheels are very interesting too....Will try fit something really larger that standard fujimi tyres (maybe something from 917 or formula one of the period?..will see..)
As my first serious 40 I think i will prefer keep all closed (doors and engine) to see better her shape, and also cause rear part of the model in my box doesnt fit good as I want.
Paolo
P.s. enclosed are some pictures of 917...my next project and an unknown Arii Pantera

I checked and in Ronnie Spain's book 1075 and 1076 had those door handles
Does anyone know what was used - was it something of a Cortina or similar?
Thanks
Ian

Rep Power: 7 | Re: I've started my Italian gt40... Paolo your car looks very cool indeed. When my current (and for the immediate future, LAST) batch of study finishes (6 weeks and counting), I think I will have to undertake a similar project as yourself. An actual GT40 car build will be on hold as study is being immediately replaced with baby number 2. I might have to email and see what you have in stock. Nothing like prototyping for the real thing.
Cheers
JAck
PS - Those 917's really do look nice.

Rep Power: 27 | Re: I've started my Italian gt40... think maybe can be better save that diamond for too many reasons.
First of all that Airfix passed away this september (all Humbroll group is gone...Airfix and heller too..) and thats a big loose for all modelling world.
Think we all started assemblying something from Airfix.

Rep Power: 15 | Re: I've started my Italian gt40... The Airfix "J" car in clear is actually an MPC casting in 1/25th scale, not 1/24the as the box says...but I doubt any kid circa 1968 was going to b!tch!
I had one, key word being "had" mine is long gone but I still have my MPC MK IV as well as my IMC Mk IV. BTW, the IMC "J" car kit is VERY rare.....
