Group 7 Can-Am

Hey All,

I didn't want to get off topic on the "Cars On a String" thread, so here goes.

I'm a big fan of the ALMS, Dyson Racing in particular, as it is the closest I think I will ever get to a late sixties Can Am race. But I long for more brutal excitement when it comes to road racing. I was too young at the time to witness an actual Can Am series race. That being said why can't it come back ? It seems to me that unrestricted road racing would be very popular !!!! I think the trick is to keep sponsors OUT of the action and charge higher ticket prices, or put a dollar limit on the expense of building the car. I'd have NO problem dropping significant coin to see the past come alive...for real.

What does everyone else think ?

LOL,
S

Re: Group 7 Can-Am

We did the World Challenge GT cars as the Support Series for ALMS and while I have to agree with you about the action and the cars - it was painfully evident that the fans just aren't there in force yet.

I remember standing on the grid at Texas Motor Speedway in September 2001 - The infield just a sea of motion and people - looked up into the stands and saw a mere few handfuls (less than 50) people as I scanned the stands..
Almost enough to draw a tear...

Re: Group 7 Can-Am

Big-foot,

It's been my experience that real race fans don't sit in bleechers. They want to be down where the action and the cars are:in the pits or the infield if they can't get into the pits. A every Daytona 24 hrs. I have been to (since '69), there is almost no one in the stands.

Re: Group 7 Can-Am

Lynn - ditto. I have always said the same thing myself. There is no comparison between a road coarse and an oval. One of the things I have always loved the most about racing is walking around to the different parts of the coarse and hearing the cars coming and going, and hearing them off in the distance through the trees.
