| engines- my stupid question.. ok...my stupid question is: the 427 engine is a v8 with a complexively cubic inch of 7400 cc, right? means 427 is the number of the the single 925cc, but expressed in inches? How is the counter to obtain cc from american engines numbers (as well as for harley davidson ones....some are 1340...other 1200..I search around and the single piston cubic inch is 74..or 80..) the 302 is a 5000 cc/ 5.0 liters, right thank u for help (dunno really if is clear my question..maybe Frank Catt is already laughing reminding my "fast unlocker..." )Paolo

| Re: engines- my stupid question.. Paolo, I'm not technical when it comes to engines, but hopefully I can still enlighten/explain the conversion for you. 1 cubic inch = 16.387cc (from 2.54 * 2.54 * 2.54, as 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres). Therefore 302 cubic inches is 302 * 16.387 (= 4948.874cc, i.e. 5 litres) 427 cubic inches is 6997.249cc (i.e. 7 litres) Hope this is what you were after. Cheers, Max

| Re: engines- my stupid question.. Hi Paolo, Not a stupid question at all - 427 is as you say the cubic capacity of the engine in inches, but this is a 'loose' description as the actual capacity is related to the exact measurements of bore stroke etc. I came across a number of 'auto math' calculators - some of which can be found here : Automotive Converters and Calculators Many seem to give slightly different results as I guess their calculations are rounded to some extent, possibly up or down. A cubic inch is approximately 2.54x2.54x2.54 = 16.38706cc - so 427inches would be approx 6997.297cc give or take a bit. I also came across this when 'googling' - a bit off topic, but some people have obviously got too much time on their hands... | OK Paulo, stand by to be really confused. 427 cubic inch = 6997.249 cubic centimeters ( 427 x 16.387 ) or near enough to 7 liter's. Now the actual capacity of one cylinder is nearly 875cc ( 53.75 cu in ) These numbers are not the actual size due to Fords market policy of the time, The 427 was actually 425 cu in and the 428 was actually 427 cu in. You may be thinking of the Ferrari system where each model number represents the actual swept volume of one cylinder .eg TR500 has 500cc per cyl ( 4cyls = 2000cc or 2 liter ), TR250 has 250cc per cyl ( 12 cyls = 3000cc or 3 liter ) Jac Mac ( And I am obviously one of the slower typists around here ) |

| Re: engines- my stupid question.. ok..more or less the counting is that. Just wonder why many told me 427 are 7400 and not 7000 as they should really be(doesnt also chevy produce a 427?..for stingray corvettes?) Btw...the V8 pc case is too cool, just suspect they are chevy ispired (2 flags on it)...and we want one powered by ford. Too cool really.

| Re: engines- my stupid question.. As a quick conversion, my friends and I would take liters and multiply by 61 to get cubic inches. Conversely, dividing cubic inches by 61 will give you liters. Example 5.0 liters x 61 = 305 cubic inches.
