Art Arfons, one of the most amazing 'speed record' men ever has just died. This was the guy who used the J79 jet engine from a scrapyard to increase the land speed records from 400 to 600. It was called The Green Monster. He asked for a manual for the engine and the Department responsible said no - it was classified.
When he was buried he had a spanner in each hand, a bowl full of salt from the Bonneville salt flats and......... the manual for the J79.

Yes - made by General Electric - J79-GE-11A 15,800 lbs static thrust using re-heat. As soon as the pilot started the engine, he declared a fuel emergency on the R/T and then did the 'after start' scan.
