I read a letter to the editor in an Australian bike magazine years ago. The correspondent said that he had a bike (DT175 I think) that was sub-par performance wise and he'd been told that drilling a hole in the piston would improve gas transfer from crankcase to combustion chamber. He'd done this and now the bike wouldn't run at all...

The magazine swore it was true and apparently pinned the message to their noticeboard for public display...
