Slk 55

Hi all, this has nothing to do with GT40's so please forgive me.
Does anyone know how to turn off traction control in the Mercedes SLK 55 AMG?
There is a button to turn off ESP but TC remains on and it is pissing me off. Nothing in the manual (yes I actually opened it), other than an explanation of what TC does.
The local dealer could not or would not tell me, can anyone let me in on the secret please.

Pete,

Can't say for sure or how it might affect other systems that may be on the same fuse, but try looking in the manual for the fuse that powers/controls that system it and remove it.

If it shares power with another system on the same fuse you may be able to "fool" the system another way into electrically thinking you have plenty of traction.

Without a wiring print its difficult to know how and what exactly to do to disable it without affecting any other related systems.

With an MB print I'm sure it can be done in such a way as to even wire in an on/off switch.

Cheers,
Scott

I spent a weekend at the AMG driving school in Miami a few weeks ago and drove all the AMG cars including the SLK. We were told that the traction control could not be shut off and they advised us to leave the ESP on, but the slightest drift and it cut on, slowing your progress substantially probably kept me out of the wall a couple of times though.

Hi Pete,
I can check and see if this is one of ours for you. It may take a few days, as I would have to start poking around with colleagues in Germany. But I'll give it a try.

In the mean time, have you tried just holding down the ESP button. There are some systems that if you hold it down for over ten seconds it will disable or bring to a higher slip/yaw threshold before intervention. Worth a try.....

Thanks Rob, I will give it a go, I'm sure it can be done because I saw a review of the SLK on Top Gear and they were lighting up the tires big time.

Hi Pete,
Traction Control can be a pain in the a##e.
I shall ask my son; he is a Mercedes technician and very knowledgeable about them. I do know that the comms systems on the Mercs are very complex, and interact in various ways, so unless it's built in, you would be unlikely to wire or switch such a change.

Cheers,

Dalton

Pete,

My son sms'd me that a normal owner (don't take offence) will not be able to turn it off completely. Even if you turn it off with the ESP OFF switch, the function will still work, just at a later parameter. However, there is a special way he knows to turn everything off completely.

Well, that doesn't help you at all, does it. You surmised that, but don't know how. Sorry about that, I'll see if I can prise more out of him, as you're not likely to be visiting Mosman, Sydney, in the next few days.

Cheers,

Dalton

Pete.
You and I must be in the same normal/abnormal category.

When I started my build on the 40 and wanted a 5.4 Boss motor and standalone stock Ford ECU without using the BEM module and all the extra unnecessary inputs I was constantly being told it could not be done.

But not wanting to accept that kept pushing until a way was found and achieved what I wanted.

Dont accept less than what you want.
Remember that if man can make it it can be broken or bypassed as required.

If you want control over the ECU functions it can be had.

David,yes:thumbsup: and black not silver.

Dimi, I think we may well be kindred spirits, next time I'm in the vicinity of the centre of Kiwidom (Bondi) I'll let you know and maybe we can have lunch and discuss ways to circumvent the rules foisted upon us?

Hi Pete -

I've asked a friend with the SL version and on his you just 'press the button' but he thinks it was removed/disabled on the SLK version .

He's contacted his Merc Tuning Specialist to ask if it can be 'turned of/disabled' on the SLK by whatever means - so when I get the response, I'll let you know.

I do know his SL is tweeked, is stupidly fast and was tested earlier this year in EVO Magazine to 598BHP  nice! (seems to eat rear tyres though...)

This is starting to sound very non-PC. I think you should all be sentenced to driving around in an East German Trabant for a week, or until it stops. Are your partners aware of these anti-social tendencies?

Hi Rob, It is a 2006 model SLK55 AMG. Engine is a 5.5 Liter V8 (I believe it is really 5.2 liter but mercedes quote 5.5). Transmission is a seven speed triptonic type box that can be used as an automatic or manual using paddles depending on what mode you select.
There are no extra's other than what they call an airscarf which blows hot air on the back of your neck so you can drive with the top down when it is forty below. A waste of time in OZ of course.
Thats it.
Jac the merc dealer service dept says wiring print "Not available".
