Speed cameras, UK

"The number of cameras in certain parts of the UK has risen twelvefold in just six years, it has been reported. The total number of sites rose from 1,672 to 4,737 between 2001 and 2007 The DfT defended its use of cameras. ‘Safety cameras are there to save lives, not make money"

I wonder how they would react if some visionary politician suggested that all profits from speed cameras, insterad of being "ploughed back" into "policing" or "safety" were instead given to charity (cancer research, BHF etc)

It'd be interesting to hear them wriggle out of doing it (and make no mistake, they wouldn't do it) and give reasons why they "need" the cash.
