Audi R15 TDI: first “second” generation diesel racing sports car

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>

  • Audi launches new LMP1 racing sports car
  • New TDI engine and many innovative approaches
  • Race debut on March 21 at Sebring (USA)
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Ingolstadt – AUDI AG is the world’s first automobile manufacturer to develop a "second" generation diesel racing sports car. Audi aims to underline its supremacy and consolidate its expertise in car technology once more at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans with the all-new Audi R15 TDI.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is particularly suited for this: Efficient and economical cars are especially required for the French endurance classic. Lightweight construction, environmentally friendly drive concepts and well-thought out aerodynamics are the focus of attention at Le Mans just as they are during the development of production cars. For this purpose the regulations intentionally give the engineers plenty of freedom.

Audi Sport fully exploited this creative freedom and put a new LMP1 race car on the track that differs significantly from all previous Le Mans sports cars. "The R15 TDI has many detailed technical solutions never seen before on a sports prototype," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "To a certain extent we followed entirely new routes."

Highly efficient TDI engine

The heart of the R15 TDI is a newly developed V10 TDI engine producing more than 600 hp, with a maximum torque output in excess of 1,050 Newton meters and which reflects the latest version of the TDI Technology invented by Audi. The power unit is more compact and lighter than the twelve-cylinder engine used in the preceding R10 TDI model. The specific fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions could also be reduced. Innovations in the turbo-charging and fuel injection areas simultaneously ensure improved engine response. The R15 TDI is also equipped with a new generation of even lighter diesel particle filters.

The new sports car’s aerodynamics, which play a particularly important role at Le Mans, are extremely refined. Like the DTM 2008 championship winning Audi A4, the airflow around and through the car was optimized with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Included among the many innovative detail solutions which can be spotted at first glance are a rear wing suspended from the top and a high nose.

Innovative vehicle electrical system concept

The vehicle electrical system in the Le Mans sports car is entirely new: A lithium-ion battery, as found in some hybrid vehicles, is used for the first time. It is lighter than the conventional battery and supplies a higher voltage.

The headlights fitted to the R15 TDI also benefit from the higher power. At Le Mans, Audi competes for the first time with a low beam unit comprised entirely of light emitting diodes, which represents the next generation of Audi LED technology for road cars.

Innovative approaches

Numerous innovative approaches are also hidden in the chassis and suspension of the diesel sports car. Due to the aerodynamic concept the front and rear suspension have been raised. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and the optimized vehicle weight the R15 TDI is significantly more agile than its predecessor.

Audi is the only automobile manufacturer to have won the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel car. "With the R15 TDI we have created the base to be in a position to win also in 2009," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

The Audi R15 TDI celebrates its race debut in the 12-hour race in Sebring, Florida in the USA on March 21. Audi Sport Team Joest plans to field three cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 13/14.

Iain,
For Audi I think it's a done deal for car 1 though Car 2 may still have a seat. I'm not sure when they announce it. There may even be a Car 3 - who knows ?
It would be nice to see Oliver in one.
Dave

Oliver was scheduled for a test last month which was cancelled because the car was "bingled" prior to the event, he will be given another run but the competition for places is fairy intense,

I think that car 1 will be Alan McNish, Tom Kristensen and Dindo Capello. After that who knows . With three cars I would not be suprised to see Johnny Herbert in one of them.

Well , that driver pairing (tripling?) [McNish, Kristensen and Capello]seemed to do the business in Sebring. The second Audi R15 came in two laps behind in P3, behind the Peugeot in P2, and the drivers in the second Audi were Luhr/Rockenfeller/Werner. I guess those driver lineups may go forward into the 24h. so it's only the third Audi R15 that needs to be confirmed and the drivers nominated.

Anybody going with a sports car and limited space - There may be a possibility I can take a limited amount of stuff for you if you deliver it and collect it again from Marlow. This depends on other races in Europe before and after Le Mans.

On Friday we may just have a curry and beer evening - If you are interested let me know in advance.

Pete.
It sort of gets made on Thursday morning and then more fresh veggies go in on Friday afternoon and it's slow cooked until about 2100hrs. About Madras strength
because we need to work on Saturday a.m. and we don't have a freezer available to us at Le Mans (for the toilet tolls).

Bernhard and Dumas reinforce Audi at Le Mans

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>

  • Porsche endurance specialists to compete in new R15 TDI
  • Audi driver lineup for 24 Hours of Le Mans now complete
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Ingolstadt/Stuttgart – The Audi driver lineup for the 24 Hours of Le Mans is complete: by signing Timo Bernhard (28/Germany) and Romain Dumas (31/France) Audi managed to engage two absolute endurance specialists for the most important sports car race of the year.

Driving a Porsche RS Spyder Bernhard and Dumas were the most successful driver pairing in the LMP2 class of the American Le Mans Series in the past three years. They clinched a total of nine overall victories for Porsche and, ultimately, won the LMP2 title twice in a row.

"Without a doubt, Timo and Romain rank among the world’s best sports car drivers," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "We’ve come to know them in the American Le Mans Series as tough but fair rivals and are pleased that within the Group the opportunity now presents itself to have them race for us at Le Mans. We’re convinced that Timo and Romain will definitely strengthen our driver squad. With victories at the 12-hour race at Sebring, the 24-hour race at Daytona and at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring under their belts they’ve already proven their skills as real endurance specialists."

Le Mans is not unknown territory for the two Porsche "factory" drivers either: Bernhard has so far contested the French endurance classic three times and in 2002, at his Le Mans debut, celebrated victory in the GT class straight away. Dumas has started from the Le Mans grid as many as eight times – most recently twice in an LMP1 car entered by the Pescarolo team in which he finished third overall in 2007.

"Winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans is any sports car driver’s dream, that’s why we are extremely happy about the opportunity to contest Le Mans for Audi," unanimously say both Porsche "factory" drivers. "Both of us are really excited and looking forward to the Audi R15 TDI."

The two will test AUDI AG’s new diesel racing sports car that won at its debut event, the 12-hour Race at Sebring (USA), right away as early as in April. The combinations of the total of nine Audi drivers starting from the grid at Le Mans on June 13/14 will be decided in the next few weeks.

With Timo Bernhard (Germany), Dindo Capello (Italy), Romain Dumas (France), Tom Kristensen (Denmark), Lucas Luhr (Germany), Allan McNish (Scotland), Alexandre Prémat (France), Mike Rockenfeller (Germany) and Marco Werner (Germany) Audi Sport Team Joest’s driver lineup is arguably as powerful as it can be.

<HR style="COLOR: #666666; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #666666" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->From Autosport:

The eligibility of the Sebring 12 Hours-winning Audi R15 TDI has been questioned by the German manufacturer's rivals, this week's AUTOSPORT magazine reveals.

Peugeot, Aston Martin Racing and ORECA are among the teams seeking a rules clarification on key elements of the radical R15. They have questioned the way Audi has used the bodywork for aerodynamic effect.

The key area of the R15 under discussion is the front aero package and, in particular, a flap above the front splitter. Audi's rivals claim this constitutes as aerodynamic element and is therefore contrary to the regulations.

The LMP1 regulations state that "with the exception of the rear wing... no bodywork or underbody element having a wing profile is permitted". Audi's rival believe that the splitter element contravenes this regulation.

Aston Martin Racing team principal George Howard-Chappell said: "It looks like it acts exactly like a flap on a wing, with the splitter arrangement acting as the main plane."

Openings on the engine cover and some of the ducting at the side of the car have also been called in question.

"The question is what constitutes an aerodynamic opening and what constitutes a radiator duct?" said Howard-Chappell.

Peugeot is pushing for changes to the R15, despite the car passing scrutineering at Sebring.

"We do not have the same interpretation of the rules as Audi," said Peugeot Sport team manager Serge Saulnier. "I do not think this issue is closed."

A clarification of the rule is imminent, according to Remy Brouard, the new director-general of Le Mans organiser the Automobile Club de l'Ouest.

"We are speaking with everyone, Audi, Peugeot and Acura, to try to clarify these points," he said. "It is the same with any rulebook."

Asked if the ACO could force Audi to modify the R15, Brouard replied: "I cannot answer that question."

It is understood that Audi has rejected overtures from the ACO to make revisions. It has argued that the car was homologated ahead of Sebring and therefore is clear to race in that form.
