Freight costs US to AUS

Just looking for a bit of input - i have been looking at some alloy cylinder heads from JEGS in US to suit Windsor V8. They are quoting a non negotiable fright rate of US$399.00 for the pair through FEDEX. Can anyone suggets a better freight method or a seller who sells performance heads and has better shipping arrangements. I was looking at Patriot or Ford Racing heads.

Hi Jason I just imported some valve covers from Branda Performance Inc.
They shipped UPS priority Global and shipping cost was U.S $84.75. Took about two weeks. Branda specialise in Shelby and Mustang parts. I don't know if they sell heads or not. Here is their web site. Tony Branda Mustang Parts Shelby Parts Cobra Parts
I also imported Trick Flow twisted wedge heads for the forty but that was a while ago.
I'll see if I can dig out the detail. I think $399 is a rip off.

I bought my new Dart block from Performance Wholesale in Qld. When I ran the figures against purchase out of the US, the price was the same and freight would have made the US purchase blow out. Might be worth checking local suppliers first.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the input - Ross, I had tried performance wholesale and for the units i am after they still work out $500.00 more landed.

Pete - thanks for the lead on the mustang parts i will try them, I thought US$399 was a rip off also compared to other stuff i have freigthed over.

J Mac - what are the CHI heads you are talking about, just for info, i am doing a mild bulid - looking for 300 - 350 horesepower.

I have found that too. A lot of companies in the US dont seem to go out of their way to source any other options - its a take it or leave it thing. I bought an alloy block from World Products and the only option they have for delivery was to fly it! They wouldnt entertain anything else. Mind you, it still saved me $3000NZD and I got it in 8 days ..... but that was when our dollar was at 80c. Just recently, I got a Ricardo box from the USA and it only cost me $249US delivered to my door! But I did all my own transport arranging for that one.

Pity you cannot use the CHI heads, no international airfreight on them!

Jason doesn't elaboarte whether his Windsor build is a 302 or 351 either way the Cleveland style heads can be used. A 'Boss 302' is exactly that a 302 with Cleveland canted valve heads or a 351W based engine with canted heads is commonly referred to as a 'Clevor'.

CHI have an excellent reputation another reputable Aussie based company is Air Flow Dynamics (AFD). Both these companies heads support up to 600HP basically out of the box.

(CHI) or Airflow Dynamics

In my experience whilst living in Australia the shipping costs + import duties made it difficult to justify shipping from stateside. I used to physically carry a lot of stuff back with me.

I think Pete meant USPS Priority Global which is generally way cheaper than UPS.
The trouble is most shops in the USA want nothing to do the USPS and will only deal with their preffered version of UPS or Fedex.

The alternative is to find a friendly American to take the parcel and repost it for you on USPS, as the domestic rates for UPS are generally really cheap.

What upsets me is there's no longer surface mail between the USA and Aus, this used to be stupidly cheap.

Having said that the cheapest way surprisigly is to bring things back as excess baggage, the rules for that are different when the trip involves the USA so you can really pile it up (literally).

Thanks guys for all the offers of assistance and help, it has given me a few more angles to follow up.

The current base engine is a 302 windsor (stock) from a 95 Mustang. I have ordered a cam from Steeda Autosports and it is on the way - freight on that was OK. Next on the agenda is heads.

Regards
Jason
