Dream garage/car collection...

I dunno if we've had something like this yet, BUT...

What is your dream car collection? ALL car guys must think of this at some point in time. Give us a list of 10 cars.

As a bonus, ONE of them MUST be your Dream Car. By Dream Car, I mean one of those fantasies where money is no object and rarity of the car is not an issue. Any car, any configuration, anything you want. I'll give you an example....

Dream Car Collection:
1 - Bugatti EB110
2 - Renault R5 Turbo
3 - Panoz GT-1
4 - McLaren F1
5 - RCR SL-C
6 - TVR Griffith V8 (conversion)
7 - Porsche 935 2.0L body w/ 3.8L Turbo engine
8 - Porsche 917 with 917-30 engine
9 - Ferrari F40 LM
10 - GT40 MkI or MkIV (I can't choose)

Dream Car
1969 Mustang Fastback converted to mid engine rear drive using a twin turbo 427 stroked aluminum tall deck block Windsor based engine with some badass heads. Dry Sump oiling, fuel injected, run by a Big Stuff II ECU, and backed with a Ricardo 6-speed. There's body mods I'd like to do, but that's just getting too damned detailed. LOL

SO...

What's your list?

Enjoy letting your imagination run free!!!

Brian

Brian,

I'm already building mine... SL-C
Nothing else counts except maybe:

917
Gt40 MK IV
Lola T70 MK 3

Gee, I guess I do know who's making these replica's..

Only 10??? Far too short a list Brian.

1. GT40 MKII (1046)
2. GT40 MKIV (67 winner)
3. Lola T70 MKIIIB
4. Bugatti Veyron
5. Ferrari F40
6. Audi RS4 Avant (well you need at least one practical car…)
7. Lamborghini Miura
8. Porsche 917 Short tail
9. Ford F3L
10. Ford RS200

Dream Car: Alfa Romeo Carabo – sex on wheels in 1968…

and in my girlfriend's garage (which I would have full access to) there would be a

Lola T332
JPS Lotus 72
Lancia Delta Integrale
Escort Cosworth
Afla T33
Ferrari P4
BMW M635
GT40 MKI (1075)
Toyota Celica GT-Four
Aston Martin DB9R

Big block 917 :lipsrsealed:

If I weren't such a cheap bugger I'd definitely buy a Zonda R, but *sigh* I'm too bloody cheap to justify it.

That's about it. Ooo, or maybe also an Indy car; just like the RCR Nemesis, but with a more styled body. E.g.,

Only ten? that isn't easy...let me see:

-a Mark I GT40 (a finished one that I can drive; might as well be the one I'm working on)
-a Ferrari 288GTO
-a Ferrari 250 GTO
-a 1963 or 64 S3 Bentley Flying Spur coupe or 2dr sedan (not a standard S3)
-a Citroen DS21- one of the special-bodied ones, either a Chapron coupe or cabriolet
-an 8C Alfa 2.9 from the thirties, one of those fabulous straight-eights with the blower
-a Packard 12, preferably a 1934 convertible coupe, Dietrich coachwork
-a 300SL Mercedes, either a Gullwing or a roadster. An original one, not one of those ones that AMG just screwed up permanently. Don't get me started on that.
-a Mercedes 600 swb, a 1982 or 3- one of the last ones made
-a 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, dark blue, with about 57,000 miles on it, needs detailing

If anyone's read to the end of the list, you will see that I am 10% of the way there already...:)

...a few others: a Cord 812 Sportsman convertible, a natural, not the one with the blower and the theme-park side pipes
...A Ferrari 365 Boxer, the one with the six exhaust outlets. The 512BB is okay, but the 365 is a prettier car, although less sorted out mechanically. But if I can afford all this, I can afford to update a 365 and sort it all out.

Hey, if you're dreaming, might as well dream big. Kind of like that guy in Dubai with the 2700 white elephant. Never let good taste get in the way, right?

What is funny, is that my wife's Dentist she works for (she's a dental hygienist) has probably 100 cars. Not joking. He is a car NUT! I asked him what his ultimate dream car was. Something he could build in his head with unlimited budget and unlimited access to tools/equipment/personnel and he couldn't answer me. Didn't have any idea what he's build. Said his mind was always going crazy thinking about the next step in one of his projects and had never honestly sat down and dreamed about a car.

I though ALL car guys did that at one point in time!!

Maybe just the broke ones with vivid imaginations....

So that's most of us then

I do wonder a lot what it would be like to be able to afford all of these cars. I did a quick and dirty estimate on what it would cost to own all the cars I posted, but leaving out the Alfa-Romeo 8C 2.9- these are among the most valuable vintage cars on the planet, along with the 250GTO and one I didn't mention, a Bugatti Type 41 Royale. Leaving the Alfa out (sigh) I came up with about 3.2 million dollars, leaving out tax and license plates.

Well, that's not the end of the world, is it? There are a lot of people in my area who own (along with the mortgage company) houses worth that, which are now dropping in value. I owuld venture to say that those cars are a better investment than real estate. Of course, you can't sleep in your car any more than you can drive your house...but if you could afford a car collection like that, you'd have a house and garage to go with it.
Or a garage with heat and a cot; who'd want to go back in the house?

We have a lot of rich guys here in the Seattle area - it's partially the local Microsoft influence - and several have some of the most amazing collections on the planet. Bill Gates' place is just across the lake from me (something like 200 cars) and John Shirley isn't that far away either for example. But to be honest, collections of that size and invested dollars aren't a lot of fun in some ways because many of the cars just sit (and deteriorate from not being driven) and there's large logistical challenges just to keep them housed, insured, batteries charged, etc. You need a small army of people to keep it all going. I guess it is fun to have your rich buddies over and walk around with a glass of wine reciting your automotive history for this and that, but that's just showing off really.

Frankly, I think about five cars....maybe six or seven....is about all that a hands on guy can maintain personally, and still have a life (wife, kids, job, etc.). Beyond that and it's continual catch-up to fix this leaking caliper or drain the gas in that tank or charge that battery, etc. I don't mean to be negative, it just that there's no way I could keep up with it so I don't even entertain ideas about what 10 cars would be the ones in my garage! But, that said, ya gotta have dreams!

ps. incidentally, John S. has a very good reputation for being a great ambassador for vintage motor sports.

I think for me it would be influenced by what vehicles I have enjoyed driving the most and conversely which I have enjoyed the least.

1. Ford Sierra 2.9 4x4
2. Mk6 Saracen based Alvis Salamander RAF Fire Engine (a staggering machine - 6WD- 4WS)
3. Jaguar xk120 (3.8L)
4. 1275 Mini Cooper S (off road or in snow)
5. Volvo s80 Twin Turbo (really wild when you want to be)
6. Wolseley 4/44 ( so overwhelmingly awful and underpowered but became slightly iconic for a while and nowadays looks quite a smart period car. I learned to drive in one (with column change !) and then took my test in a military vehicle)
7. Early Petrol Land Rover SWB with canvas hood on the back. Brilliant fun car. Fantastic 4WD for the time. (I had to contibute my wages for a couple of months for one that got burned out [in the 60's in the R.A.F.]
8. My last motorsickle, the Ducati 999. Just orgasmic. Just such incredibly good handling. Just so fast.
9. My third motorsickle, The Norton Dominator. At the time the Iconic bike to have.
10. Renault Clio Sport - amazing performance and a lot of fun especially in the wet.

Those I hated:
1. JAGUAR E Type
2. Austin J2 Mini bus (RAF Coastal Command - one was assigned to each crew [Allegedly quite good for shagging though])
3. Triumph Bonneville. Shit awful handling (I sold it for £150 but I wished I'd kept it as they are fetching real money these days)
4. Mercedes 190d Taxis like they use to use in Cyprus. (Because usually they were on the way back from a good thrash and I was invariable as drunk as a skunk and invariably had to stop to throw up/ relieve my self /clear my head /all). I think it was the car that upsetting me.
