When I bought my bike my wife insisted on me getting a helmet. I dismissed the need but she insisted so I purchased one. First day out she took a spill and if not for the helmet she would of banged bare her head on a guard rail. Two days later I was messing around pretending that I a teenager popping wheelies and wouldn't you know it but I over rotated and went down HARD!!! Luckily I was wearing my helmet and suffered no head injuries but ruined the helmet.

My SO and I were out for a bicycle ride one afternoon and some Bubba in a big ol' bad-ass 4-wheel drive pickup damn near took out the back of her head. I don't think he did it on purpose, but he wasn't in any mood to give any extra room to her despite the fact that there was no traffic in the opposing lane. His mirror was one of those that stuck WAAAY out beyond the sides of the vehicle, he probably towed a trailer and needed the visibility. I have conflicting feelings regarding what he would have done had his mirror impacted her head, but based on his choice not to give her extra space as he passed I'd damn near bet a paycheck he would have just kept on going.

Blame the heat if you want to, but we haven't been out for a ride since. I know my SO was rattled by the incident, don't know for sure if the Bubba even knew there WAS an incident. I know I shook in my shoes for about 15 minutes just imagining what ALMOST happened...and I mean by mere inches.

Sad state of affairs....way TOO many people think that bicycles should not be on the roads, but in fact they have every bit the right to be there that those Bubbas in the big ol' 4-wheel drive pickups have. That's the law....the reality is that the Bubbas win that one EVERY TIME!

I don't even ride to the corner convenience store without a helmet, developed the habit when I was a poor college student and a motorcycle was my primary form of transportation...never got on the street without a helmet on that bike, either.

Put 'em on, guys 'n' gals!

My SO was all hot on moving to Austin. She went to look around and visit friends, bought bike there just for the visit (she prefers riding to driving if possible). I was concerned since we did not know how friendly the environment was for cyclist. Ends up she was taken out by a pizza delivery driver - ended up on the hood with some moderate injuries. Get this, the insurance for the pizza company tried to sue her for the damages to the hood. Only in America.

That was the end of Austin in her book.

I lost a friend on Sub Base, Pearl Harbor in 1979 while we were on a short lunch ride. Went around a corner we took every weekday. There was water on the road that morning. His wheels went out from under him and his head went straight down onto the curb. He lived just long enough to get to the hospital. He never opened his eyes again.

I had a helmet the next day. I was the one that usually rode in front.

That is very sad, I rode in the 80's without a helmet, just didn't think about it at the time. The fact that his loss meant you bought a helmet means his death was not in vain.

I used to cycle race in my younger days. Had a tremendous tumble landing on my head at over 80 kph going down hill one day when another rider clipped my front wheel. My helmet split from front to back but I was OK apart from grazes and bruising. I have no doubt it would have been much worse if I had not been wearing the helmet. I never get on my bike without the headgear.

I'm sure one day I will get one. It's one of those things for me that, "I used to train without one" back in the ABA days (Before USCF) when you trained without one, and then put on a simplistic (at best) leather strapped device that was called a helmet (by 1970 standards), and raced (before racing became “cool” in the US).
