Thomas Jefferson

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
Thomas Jefferson

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.
Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
Thomas Jefferson

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
Thomas Jefferson

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
Thomas Jefferson

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Thomas Jefferson

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Thomas Jefferson

To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:
I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property - until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Al, I have always been a big fan of Mr Jefferson, a truly great man.

An when you take some of his quotes, particularly the ones were he speaks to the problems that Govenment can produce and list them like that, you might think he was against big Govenment.

But Al, you and I both know that he, probably more than anyone is responable for the establishment of our form of big Govenment!

He was against big government, that's quite clear. Why do we need big goverment? Are we not capable of taking care of ourselves?

Al, it appears to me that only after he worked quite hard to establish the Fedral Govenment did he begin to worry about the potential down side.

And rightly so!

Big Govenment can be very good for some things, but very bad in others.

It was then, as now a balancing act.

Sometimes Government does not do enough (ie 1929, slavery....)

Sometimes it does too much...............

Thats the beauty of Mr Jeffersons Government, it is a constantly evolving thing.

I don't believe that he ever intended government to be a "nanny state".

By the way, did CA actually vote to give college tuition to illegal aliens? Or did I hear wrong?

I also admire Mr. Jefferson greatly, Mr. Franklin even more so (mostly due to his great sense of humor).

Were Mr. Jefferson alive and POTUS today, how would todays media react and report when the story broke that he was shagging one of his slaves (Oops)? And better yet, had fathered a child with the aforementioned Ms. Hemmings?

Hey, Arnold has nothing on TJ!

Jefferson was a member of The Democratic-Republican Party which is the ancestor of the current Democratic Party. The current media probably would hide it, or try to.

No Al, the Democratic party is very proud of Mr Jefferson.

You seem to have forgotten that it was the Republicans that went on the "nookie" witch hunt! (Clinton)

By and large Liberals are just that, Liberals.

And our morality today should be to a higher standard than it was during Jefferson's time. What does Clinton have to do with it?

Domtoni,

Al was implying that today the Democratic party might have tried to hide Mr Jefferson's private life.

I just pointed out the obvious, we all know its the Republicans who go on moral "witch hunts".

You do remember the failed impeachment of President Clinton. After dragging the country through the mud for years, they could not even get a majority of Republicans to vote for impeachment.

"Nookie witch hunt"? The guy was getting blow jobs by a 18 year old girl and stuffing cigars in her bottom in the Oval Office. If that were a republican he'd still be hanging by his nuts! Witch hunt? Geez Jim wake up and smell the coffee! He should have been impeached, if that were my daughter he'd be in a wheelchair with head braces dribbling on himself for life! And that's the kindest thing I can think of!

Clinton is a smart man. Too bad he never used his intelligence for the country. When Kenneth Starr's investigation into all the "gates" such as, and most egregious, Chinagate got too close to the truth, he had Janet Reno request an investigation into the Lewinsky affair.

"The two-page order, requested by Attorney General Janet Reno after she received a briefing from Starr's staff, authorized Starr to investigate "whether Monica Lewinsky or others suborned perjury, obstructed justice, intimidated witnesses, or otherwise violated federal law other than a Class B or C misdemeanor or infraction in dealing with witnesses, potential witnesses, attorneys or others concerning the civil case Jones v. Clinton."

Gee Al, you say that like it's a bad thing.

I sincerely hope you are joking.

The fact that Clinton was voted in for a second term is a sad commentary on a morally lacking electorate.

Al,

When President Clinton left office 66% of the people approved of his job.

But look at the bright side, 34% agreed with you!

If he could run again, he would be easily elected!

And quite frankly if he were President now our economy would be much much better.

If you want I can pull up those economy charts...... na, you would not like that, would you?

Say Al,

Sorry, Al, I was wrong, I went back and looked, 66% approved of President Clintons job, but 11% had no opinion, so only 23% agreed with you, sorry for the mix up!
