I'd almost bet that person, the well-meaning "child expert", was a teacher, Al.
Your parents raised you right, but you'd be surprised how many parents these days feel that they need not be parents to their children, preferring to be friends to them, and expect the schools to serve the function of teaching their children right from wrong....and, of course, they then get mad when the schools attempt to do just that.
I've never been a "spare the rod and spoil the child" believer, but I did tell parents that they are not only their child's first teacher, they are their child's most influential teacher b/c they have their children 18 hours a day, whereas a teacher only has 6 hours with them and must get a curriculum taught, too. Most of them never think of it like that.
IMHO, we desperately need to return to the values of a generation (or, two) ago. We're going to hell in a handbasket, and suddenly the "Leave it to Beaver" generation looks pretty good.
I'm not holding my breath, though...and the deterioration seems to be accellerating at an alarming rate. Perhaps the predictions of America's demise as a world power are true! I can tell you that the Orientals I met while in Japan as a child were incredibly DRIVEN to achieve and that they are that way to this day. We better wake up and smell the coffee, or we'll be a culture of have-beens within a couple of more generations.
Sadly.....
