I'll tell you what, I'm very very proud to be a liberal, someone who cares about others, cares about the less privileged, cares about those who are sick and can't afford a doctor and those who are hungry and have no food.

Yes I'm very proud. We have left the dark ages where sex is not talked about, where natural human functions are not something to be embarrassed about, but something to be understood.

We all hold political and societal beliefs that we are "proud of" -- I would hope that if we weren't, we'd change them.

But reasonable people can and do disagree about what is best. And reasonable people have means of discussing those disagreements and working them out like adults.

For example, Lonesome Nutjob, who apparently is some ex-hippy rocker (props on that) and who came of age during the 60s, now has a problem with how folks in NY state are proposing to educate children about sex.

I fully agree that educating children on sex is a good thing, and helps prevent unwanted pregnancies, sexual disease, etc. I also agree that the proper way to do this is open for debate and that reasonable people can disagree on it.

So, our friend Nutjob, when confronted with a proposal on sex ed he didn't like could have said something like this:

I found this article today. I think it shows the schools in New York going too far in trying to educate kids on sex. I do not agree with this approach and think it is wrong for XXXXXXX reasons.

Instead, we get this guy telling us that folks who are "liberals" are engaged in the moral destruction of children - INCLUDING THEIR OWN.

So basically he's saying that liberals are killing their kids.

Bob likes getting a rise of out people. His own life cearly is not interesting enough for him, so that is his daily goal. To come here on this board and hack people off. Well, today he succeeded. I give Bob. You win. You got under my skin.

The funny thing is it's usually the wrinkly old conservative guy, like Bob, who has the child porn factory in the basement. No offense to our other far more reasonable conservative folks here who I enjoy discussing things with (Pete, Mark, even the esteemed Veek, etc.).

I'd take you all more seriously of you'd all stop calling each other names. I consider myself to be 'mostly' Liberal, but not in the sence you guys use the label! I vote conservative, but remember our Conservative is not like yours. I know you know that.

I still cannot get over how many 'facts' and graphs and constant references to the past you guys repeat and stand behind. Each one of you proving your point concisively.

I am dieing to say, "get over yourselves", but of course I will not. Fix it you fools and stop dividing over every single issue. Is there absolutely nothing that you do agree on? Or do you simply hate each other just because your political flag's a different colour?

The root cause of this phenomenon -- my way or no way and the "other side is evil" -- is guys like Lonesome. You don't start a "discussion" on the topic of sex education by asking "liberals" if they are proud to be liberal and claiming they are destroying their children.

One of the things we need here is guys on "your side" (or whatever) to call people out when they do that. If Al, or Veek, or others, would take a post like that from Lonesome and say, hey, this is the wrong way to do this, we might get somewhere. I try to do that on occasion, and I hope it is done with me.

Yeah, that was my point, which you missed completely. I duplicated Lonesome's post word for word and inserted "stupid liberal crap" for "stupid conservative crap" so our friend Domtoni could see that Lonesome was not just "asking a question."

But, at least in completely missing the point, you proved it, which is that "questions" loaded and phrased that way are one of the, if not the, biggest problems in American politics today.

Let me say I am not a conservative, I am not a liberal. I try to be centrist (as I stated when I began writing on the health care issue). And not all religious people are fundamentalist, actually the bulk are not fundamentalist. I hope you have all seen the move "Of Gods and Men". Its worth a view.
