Excellent writing about the ethics of gun ownership...

I am not intending to make another gun debate thread that will undoubtedly turn into a seemingly endless circular argument; instead, I want to pass on this essay which is a fantastic read.

This is a lengthy article authored by Sam Harris - a progressive atheist who happens to support gun rights. He is a beautiful writer and I think he makes a very logical case for gun ownership.

I agree...in general.

However, I couldn't disagree more with statements like this:
"But I think it is perfectly rational for even a very well-trained gun owner to decide that there are too many risks associated with carrying a gun in public." (Then why bother getting a concealed carry permit?)
Logic would seem to dictate that one runs a far higher risk of encountering 'bad guys' in public than in ones own home. Therefore it logically follows that "in public" is exactly where one ought to carry.

(He made a number of what I consider to be rather illogical postulations with regard to what constitutes 'easy access' to a weapon...and on other topics as well. But, that's just MHO.)
