Furthermore, NEITHER candidate's campaign was designed to win the "popular vote". They BOTH ran campaigns that were designed to/focused on winning the E. College vote.

Trump was successful in doing that. Billary was not.

Re: GT40s.com Paddock Politics Thread

Which raises the question (again)...why do we even have the popular vote if the E. College is not going to honor the winner of the popular vote?

Been hashed out before, I know that...it's just perplexing to me!

Cheers!

Because the popular vote in each state decides who gets the electoral votes for the state. Nothing perplexing.

Short answer (again): Knowing it would be comprised of several separate, independent nations ("states"), The Founders intended that the U.S. be a republic as opposed to a strict, 'majority rules' democracy.

Simply put, the E.C. ensures (as much as possible) that a handful of states with huge populations cannot impose their presidential choice all on the rest.

Re: GT40s.com Paddock Politics Thread

There's an article on the The Daily Beat today about the inequality of the Electoral College and the a new movement to establish a state amendment where the winner of the popular vote gets all that particular state's electoral votes. Makes total sense to me. The Electoral College is a 300-year old idea that doesn't work today since it gives to much power to Wyoming or Vermont.

"Conservatives like to remind us that America is not “a democracy,” but “a republic.” Yet the core value of any “republic” is equality. Political necessity may have led the framers to compromise that equality. There is no justification for allowing the states to compromise it even more."

...and the E.C. exists for that very reason. As I mentioned before, "...the E.C. ensures (as much as possible) that a handful of states with huge populations cannot impose their presidential choice all on the rest..." IOW the E.C. ensures (as much as possible) that all states have a more-or-less equal say in choosing who will be president. Electing the president BY STRAIGHT POPULAR VOTE doesn't.

Re: GT40s.com Paddock Politics Thread

TWO STATES IN THE MIDDLE OF AMERICA!

Illinois & Oklahoma:

I thought these two states, made for an interesting contrast. The first part about Illinois and the second part is about Oklahoma!

PART 1 - Illinois

"A State with No Republicans"!

Some interesting data on the 'state' of the State of Illinois. There are more people on welfare in Illinois than there are people working. Chicago pays the highest wages to teachers than anywhere else in the U.S. Their average pay is $110,000/year. Their pensions average 80-90% of their income. Wow, are Illinois and Chicago great or what? Be sure to read till the end. I've never heard it explained better. Perhaps the U.S. should pull out of Chicago?

Body count:
In the last six months, 292killed (murdered) in Chicago.
221 killed in Iraq ;AND Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the entire US.

This was Chicago´s chain of command:

President: Barack Hussein Obama.
Senator: Dick Durbin.
House Representative: Jesse Jackson Jr. .
Governor: Pat Quinn.
House leader: Mike Madigan.
Atty. Gen.: Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike).
Mayor: Rahm Emanuel.
The leadership in Illinois - all Democrats.

Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago.
Of course, they're all blaming each other.
Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!

Let us getALL the facts out while we are at it:

Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!

State pension fund $78 Billion in debt, worst in country.
Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!

Cook County ( Chicago ) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!

This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois. And he was going to 'fix'Washington politics for us?

George Ryan is no longer Governor, he is in prison.

He was replaced by Rob Blagojevich who is, by the way, also in prison.

And Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned and, that's right, he and his wife are both in prison.

The Land of Lincoln, where our Governors and Representatives make our license plates. What?

As long as they keep providing entitlements to the population of Chicago, nothing is going to change, except the state will go bankrupt before the country does.

"Anybody who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the Government take care of him better take a closer look at the American Indian."

Don't forget Detroit, another great example of a Democratic empire.

With all the bad news, there is hope, so let's go to:

PART 2- Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA- may soon have plenty of new residents!

THIS IS REALLY INTERESTING, AND TRUE... PLEASE READ IT!

Oklahoma is the only state that Obama did not win even one county in the last election... While everyone is focusing on Arizona's new law, look what Oklahoma has been doing!!!

An update from Oklahoma:

Oklahoma law passed, 37 to 9 an amendment to place the Ten Commandments on the front entrance to the state capitol. The feds in D.C., along with the ACLU, said it would be a mistake. Hey this is a conservative state, based on Christian values... HB 1330

Guess what... Oklahoma did it anyway.

Oklahoma recently passed a law in the state to incarcerate all illegal immigrants and ship them back to where they came from unless they want to get a green card and become an American citizen. They all scattered. HB1804. This was against the advice of the Federal Government, and the ACLU, they said it would be a mistake.

Guess what... Oklahoma did it anyway.

Recently they passed a law to include DNA samples from any and all illegal's to the Oklahoma database, for criminal investigative purposes. Pelosi said it was unconstitutional SB1102.

Guess what... Oklahoma did it anyway.

Several weeks ago, Oklahoma passed a law, declaring Oklahoma as a Sovereign state, not under the Federal Government directives. Joining, Texas, Montana and Utah as the only states to do so.

More states are likely to follow: Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, West Virginia, Mississippi and Florida. Save your confederate money, it appears the South is about to rise up once
again. HJR 1003

The federal Government has made bold steps to take away our guns. Oklahoma, a week ago, passed a law confirming people in this state have the right to bear arms and transport them in their vehicles. I'm sure that was a setback for the criminals The Liberals didn't like it-

But...

Guess what... Oklahoma did it anyway.

Just this month, the state has voted and passed a law that ALL drivers' license exams will be printed in English and only English and no other language. They have been called racist for doing this, but the fact is that ALL of the road signs are in English only. If you want to drive in Oklahoma, you must read and write English. Really simple.

If Obama/Holder/Lynch were still in charge you could bet your last dime the feds would be filing lawsuits over Oklahoma's actions.

Doug, I honestly don't see why we are talking about this, The Electoral College is by law what decides who is elected. It's not the number of hamburgs consumed or the rainfall for any given day. Seriously, why are you are even talking about this? If you aren't happy with it, see your Congressmen, start a movement, but the last election was decided by the Electoral College, end of story.

Re: GT40s.com Paddock Politics Thread

Correct, the last election WAS...not that it should have.

There IS a movement afoot to do away with the EC and use popular vote, instead. Rod has posted a link to the online petition, which can be signed by anyone without having to reveal political affiliation or preference.

If you really DO like the EC, Al, I'd suggest you enjoy it while it lasts. The number of voters who are upset with the action of the last EC is growing as Trump continues with the looney-tunes manner in which he manages his tweets, etc. I've never heard such discontent with an elected POTUS (not even when the Conservatives were crying in their beer over B.O.). Even the Repubs have turned against Trump (signaling that they, too, are not exactly pleased with the most recent EC results) and he has had to attempt a shaky alliance with some of the congressional democrats to get things through congress.

It's just a matter of time until the country dumps the EC, Al....just a matter of time until the popular vote IS what matters, as it should in this day and age when the EC is no longer necessary to determine the winner...just a matter of time .

Cheers!

Doug

Between now and "then," some former and current members of the Trump team, will be going to jail or maybe they'll be pardoned. But Mueller seems to honing in on some folks (Manafort, Kushner, Flynn) and I can't wait to see some handcuffs on some these Trumpians.

BTW, nice speech today at the UN. Nuclear war anyone?

Damn!!! I figured as much...put two egomaniacs on the same planet and they'll find a way to try to eliminate each other...let's hope they don't eliminate the entire population of earth!

"War is not healthy for children...or other living things!"

It's as true today as it was back in the days of the Vietnam "police action".

Sounds great...but our POTUS "guaranteed" his was large during the pre-elction debates...maybe he can stand on the Pacific coast of Oregon and just shake his at North Korea. That ought to scare 'em (at least, I would expect our POTUS to guarantee it should scare 'em!) 😳🤔🤐

Cheers?
