Hi guys
Hearing on the news you have been hit by a couple of big quakes.

Hope all on here are safe and secure after this terrible event

Ian

Im about 400 miles south, slept right thru and dont seem to really feel aftershocks. Having said that the experts are telling us that it was actually two seperate types of quake a short distance apart and about three times as strong as the biggest Christchurch shake. Plenty of pics & videos up on the net, Main Highway & Railway in a mess along with infrastructure for inter-island ferries in a mess will mean surface transport and freight out of action for some time until alternative routes are opened up.

Thanks Jac

Good to hear direct how bad things actually are.

Hope the rest of the Kiwis are well and firing on all cylinders

Ian

From what I understand there were two fatalities, one in a building collapse and one due to heart attack immediately after the shake. Major surface displacement in some places, pics showing 1 to 2 meter variation, dairy farms with no power and rotary milking platforms thrown off their tracks-cows still have to be milked- not funny when you have large herds~300 upward. Camper van agents doing urgent survey to locate vehicles in case some have been caught in slips/rockfalls. Several instances where looters have entered properties after owners were told to evacuate with threat of tsunami. Lake forming behind dam created by rockfall which is a concern for those downstream. In general lots of structural damage in what is a predominately rural area with folk who will have to use some #8 wire type thinking for a while and the big picture will take some time to become clear.

Jack is on the mark. Things down here are fine, but the road and rail network north of Christchurch is a mess. Lots of pictures here:

It will take a while to get things moving again, but we will. People are pretty philosophical about it all, especially after the Christchurch quakes in 2010 and 2011. Just thankful our building code is so rigorous. A 7.5 in some other parts of the world would likely have resulted in massive casualties.
