Lime Rock/Watkins Glen Vintage Races-2014

We will be driving up from San Antonio to attend the vintage races at Lime Rock over Labor Day weekend and the Watkins Glen vintage races the following weekend. Is anyone planning to attend/race?

I'm about 45 min from Lime Rock. I will be there for at least the 'through the villages' Historic parade on Thursday and the Sunday Concours. If you get here by mid day Thursday I would suggest going directly to the center of Falls Village, a quaint little New England village that is used as the parade destination. Cars from the race track, everything from ancient racers to Oscas to Porches to Lolas and such along with 30 or so classic 'invited' spectators machines leave from the track late afternoon (around 4pm I think but check with the track) and drive through the adjacent towns of Lakeville, Salisbury and Falls Village, ending up in the center of Falls Village, a sort of widened paved area where three roads meet. They park in this area as the roads are shut down for it. Then most head for the Falls Village Inn (right at the spot) for a beer. Food, a band and more are right there also. The cars are "chaperoned" by a Lime Rock track official car - they don't go too slow except for the village centers, no police escort or anywhere in sight. No registrations, plates or mufflers on the race cars. Pick out a good spot on the other side of the railroad underpass so you can see them coming up the road and through the 180 turn under the bridge. You can get right up to all the cars parked in the street.
Friday at the track is practice, racing on Sat and Mon. Concours on Sunday. The cars at the Concours are just amazing. There are also 'corrals' where like cars of a Marque park together.
If you send me a PM I will give you my cell # so we can meet if you like. I'll buy the first round.

Just a caution to those folks coming from the South - bring a jacket if you're an early riser as it has lately been in the high 40's/low 50's at daybreak in the Lime Rock area and may be the same at the beginning of September.

Thanks, Al. We will be helping with the pits for one of my friends who is running a 911 at both events. If we arrive on time, he has offered me the right seat during the Thurs parade. I appreciate the reality check on the weather. I keep forgetting that it is not 90+ degrees in other parts of the county in August and forget to bring the right clothes.

Jim: I seen the videos and read the stories. It will be great to see the car in person. I've also been following the stories about the SGC 003. You have an impressive design and build project that I look forward to following thru its development.

I look forward to a great couple of weeks at the two tracks. I have not been to either track before.

I'll bring some SCG 003C stuff to show.

We leave San Antonio tomorrow morning to drive up in our Grand Sport and, after visiting a few sites of interest, we will be at Lime Rock in time to do the parade on Thurs with the Porsche race car. We will also be at the Concurs on Sunday to rubber-neck at the mechanical porn on display. I look forward to meeting you-all (that's Texan from a displaced Yankee) at the event.

Looks like you may not need the jacket, at least for Thursday and Friday. It may struggle to reach 70 Degrees today but the heat comes back, finally, after a very cool summer, for the end of the week. May even see 85 or so.

....today in my neck of the woods, with the humidity, 106! Yesterday was the same....I'll take 80 all day long. Roll on fall and winter. Wish I could attend this event....sounds like it will be a great event.

JD,
I will be at Lime Rock and at Watkins Glen as well. Look forward to meeting you there. I will be in the parade on Thursday and popping in from time to time the whole weekend. I will be in a Porsche 550 spyder replica

Hopefully you Al and I can get together!

Eric: We will look for you as well as AJ. I will also be in the parade as a passenger in the Dave Hutchings Porsche 911 race car. Wife and I are currently in Virginia visiting friends. I am planning to take a side trip tomorrow to visit the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philly. Weather is looking good and I am really enjoying the cool, sunny days.

The Lime Rock Historic Festival kicked off with the Thursday Historic Parade through the streets from the track to the New England town of Falls Village. The gathering had some ancient and some modern machinery with a mix of race cars and spectator vehicles making up an eclectic mix. There were quite a few Aston Martins and Porsches of all years, a Cunningham, an old Indy car, a couple of Stutz's and so many MG's I thought we were at Watkins Glen for a moment. In the series of still photos, you'll find forum member Eric (in front of the Falls Village Inn) and yours truly (at the aft end of an orange Porsche 911 in an overall shot of the parked group).

The video includes another forum member, John Dewey, riding shotgun in the white # 310 Porsche 911 of Dave Hutchinson right at the start of the video. Eric's 550 is in there as well.

Great weather, outstanding cars and good beer at the Inn. Hope to see Jim's creation at the Concours on Sunday.

I am coming to watkins if the weather holds my friend is driving my GTD40 I will be a passenger , I broke my leg. Coming from Toronto . Be there Sunday am

I helped in the paddock with my friend's 911 (Dave Hutchings' #310, 911 Porsche) (Yes-they let a Corvette guy help with the Porsche). There were 3 friends Porsches in the group. Dave finished in 2nd place in each of the four races on Sat & Mon at Lime Rock. The other 2 guys finished either 3rd or 4th. It was a great time for me and I got to drive the track in the Vette on Monday.
We are now at Elmira, NY and will be checking in at Watkins Glen tomorrow for the vintage race. I have entered the Vette in one of the wine country rally's on Friday and then will be helping Dave on Sat & Sun doing whatever is needed as part of the support for the races. Any day with classic cars is a day well spent. 2 weeks on the road so far and at least 1 more to go before we head back to San Antonio.
