The season starts soon.

With the new race season starting soon, things are a little hectic and cramped in the workshop. I really must have a tidy up because its embarrassing.
A very expensive rebuilt Porsche engine now back in 917 after its Silverstone blow up, GT40 awaiting its new exhaust to arrive, and T70 being blitzed.

There just are not enough hours in the day and I,m getting too old for it all. It is a lot of hard work keeping them all going and I ought to stop, but I still feel competitive.

Anyone else in a similar mess, so I won,t feel so guilty ?

Graham, Unsure where in Suffolk you live but I grew up in Ipswich but if I'd have rode my bike past your garage and seen those cars parked there I'd have thought I died and gone to heaven. Stunning mate!

I don,t know about stunning though, as close up they are well playworn.
Anyone who has not raced or had the opportunity to look closely at a well used competition car will not realise just how hammered they can get in even a short race. The 917 is particularly vunerable. When I finally pack the racing up, then I shall give them a tidy up, but not too much. It is all part of a history even for replicas.

Strewth Alex,

does insanity run in your family !!!!! That is one helluva beast, but will it really be user-ish friendly.

My 917K replica is very much run in a period way and feel, albeit with a smaller Porsche engine(3.6ltr), not only to comply more to the race regulations, but to replicate as much as is financially viable, the original concept.

Bon voyage into outer space with that thing, but watch the weight and high centre of gravity, especially at that rear end, otherwise you are going to gain no real advantage. What are you using for rear view vision? A periscope !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mine is bad enough with an original type fan housing.

It has a dog box and a growl to the exhaust, and I must be barking mad to race it. I dare not paws to think about what it has cost me and I always seem to be chasing my tail in running it.

Sorry, terrible English humour.

rear visibility ... hahahahaa, um, yea, hahahahahaha

If by user-friendly you mean no problems w/ cooling .... if so, I'm good there .... other than that........well, it's probably not important enough to worry about?

Alex, are you widening the rear bodywork to fit those tires?

Re: The season starts soon.

A couple of weeks ago Gulf Oil UK celebrated their 500th garage branding in the UK and as usual we had to have one of the cars displayed as part of the celebrations. I only took a couple of pictures as Gulf had their own photographer there and I,m still waiting for them to send the better ones through. Early morning setting up shot with the 917 this time, and one of the great cake later on, unfortunately cut into before I had a chance to see it complete.

Even had the Mayor, and local MPs and dignitaries officially cutting the tape.

It was a very long and busy day with great hospitality from Gulf and the garage owners.
Hard life, but some one has got to do it !!

Re: The season starts soon.

Well 2016 was pretty disastrous for my racing season, so fingers crossed that this one, nearly a year on from my last posting, will be better.

The "Achilles Heel" with the 917 has in the main always been with the ECU system. The OMEX unit is now gone and buried, and a new MSD has taken its place. Heavier, but so much better with instant improvement in spark, starting and management.

The 40, with its rebuilt engine, and getting on towards 450bhp should be somewhat more competitive also, but whether it will be as reliable as the "old" set up was, remains to be seen.
Few minor things to do, but basically all ready for warmer weather and pre season testing.

The T70 Mk3B is still in a thousand bits after taking it apart for its total rebuild. Watch this space when it begins to take shape again.

Thought you might like this head on picture of the 917 taken by someone else at Silverstone last year. If you think that you sit low in a 40, think again. I would like to show you more pictures of my own taking, but as 99% of them are from my mobile telephone this site does not accept them when I try to upload them.

Re: The season starts soon.

That is a great picture I have always loved the 917 lines. I am curious how you could sit lower than in the GT40 since I sit on the belly pan to begin with? I'm running about 3 1/2" or 8.8cm ride height. How about some video so we can hear it?

Re: The season starts soon.

Mike, I take your point.

You do in fact lie down more in a 917, whereas the 40 is much more upright.

So, coupled with the much lower roof line you do look into the exhaust of a 40.

That sounds like a neat view at full tilt down the front straight.
