Need Muffler thoughts

Hi All,

Well things are picking up speed and we need to decide very quickly what mufflers to use for our exhaust so we can get that info back to Fran. The desire is to have the exhaust exit through the back of the race-tail and we're looking for as quiet a ride as possible.

Any thoughts on what fits in the tight confines and gives a sophisticated sound instead of raw V8 hotrod.

Cheers,

Ruth

There must be some mistake ... if you add mufflers you can't do this then:

Hushpower pro-series (now owned by flowmaster). They are a tight fit but are quiet. No cats.

The Burns Stainless mufflers are sourced from Coast Fabrication. I have one but these things do not really quiet the car much. These are a true race muffler and don't seem to be what Ruth is looking for, not even with the bigger can.

Ruth, if sound suppression is really important to you, I would consider a nice high-flow cat in addition to whatever muffler you choose. Power loss is minimal as my friends before/after dyno charts proved to me.

Here is a youtube video where they compare the sound of the different Flowmaster mufflers, including Hushpower Pro -> [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQUhG9Cj-xg"]Flowmaster Muffler Comparison - YouTube[/ame]

Here is another video where they compare the sound of the different Flowmaster mufflers, including Hushpower HP-2. The HP-2 has a smaller profile, but it's kinda ugly -> [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUUteVjNdI0"]Flowmaster Muffler Comparison : Muffler Shootout 2 - YouTube[/ame]

Both the Hushpower Pro & HP-2 seems to have a quieter, smoother tone that the other mufflers demonstrated. A key feature of the Hushpower series is that their case is insulated so they're just warm to the touch. That means they can be mounted in tight spaces and they should reduce temps under the rear clam shell.

Another option is the DynoMax VT. It has a no drone valve to quiet things down when cruising at highway speeds. Here is a video that compares a Flowmaster full size muffler (model unknown) to the DynoMax VT. The DynoMax VT is much quieter -> [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_g5i4K9G4k"]Magnaflow vs Dynomax VT - YouTube[/ame]

I spoke to a Pypes Tech Rep and he tells me that the Race Pro is their quietest muffler. Here is a video that compares the Pypes Race Pro to the DynoMax VT. The DynoMax VT is much quieter -> [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQDY3PD7g0w"]Pontiac 455 - muffler comparison - Dynomax VT's vs. Pypes Race Pros - YouTube[/ame]

Colin and Ruth have a race tail and diffuser which has a little less available space than the street tail..just FYI to maybe help with the choice

Those videos were very helpful. The Hushpowers all sounded better than the other Flowmasters. Will need to figure out what fits. Also looking at Kooks, Borla S-Type (since they don't sell their Touring as just a muffler), and Sebring. Wonder how they compare to the Hushpower. This is difficult without hearing them and the exhaust note is a major contributor to the character of the car.

Thanks again for the videos.

Kooks exhaust MFG is just a few miles away from me. Let me know if you need anything there.

I toured their facility a couple months ago...very impressive!

Mike - That sounds great! I wonder if they'll fit with a Ricardo........

The 96.50 transaxle is like a mini-me compared to the Ricardo. I saw Allan's car with the Ricardo and that transaxle is a monster i.e takes up some real estate.
