Fuel Senders - Resistance Problems

Can anyone with fuel senders do me a favor, or the folks at RF?

If I measure the resistance on my senders with the arm at the complete "down" position I get around 265 ohms.

However, if I move it maybe 1/8 of its' complete travel this goes from 265 ohms to an open circuit - in only 1/8 travel.

That means this thing won't measure any fuel level at all until it is almost flat empty.

Both of my senders behave the same way. Both are bent similarily to the manual photos, but this would not make any difference to the sender - it seems to only

Am I missing something here?

Well, answered that question. Wrong pinout hookup on my side, it is fine reading from around 265 to 15-20 ohms or so. Should work ok!

Ron
Sounds like you sorted this one out ok.It was very unlikely for you to have 2 crook senders. I have VDO gauges and tubular sender as I'm intending to fill tanks with foam and arm type sender would be jammed in 1 spot by the foam. The only hastle is to fit the foam in the baffled tanks I will need to cut holes in the top of each section and then fit fuel proof covers.A bit of work.

Re: Fuel Senders - Resistance Problems

Ross,

The foam cutting is easy !!!!

Get a pipe slightly larger than the outside of the sender body, sharpen it inside of the pipe (put a chissle style finish ) at one end and once the final position is realised cut the foam with the sharpened pipe. Use a motion similar to that used when lighting a piece of wood with another piece of wood ( place the pipe between the palms of your hands which are in the praying position and rotate the pipe with a little downward pressure. The real trick is to sharpen the INSIDE of the pipe. GOOD LUCK !!!!!

Best wishes,

Robert
