Alternative power

Here's something you don't see everyday...

Considering that we are all fabricators and gearheads here, I thought I might share a wacky idea for an alternate powerplant.

Gnome H.1200 (T58-GE-8) Specification

Power Output...............................................................1350 SHP(Shaft horsepower).
Weight..........................................................................142 KG.(313 lbs)

Priced from £2,500 ($3,946.13) (+VAT (if applicable).

The Gnome (T58) can be adapted to a number of other applications.
Boats being a fine example of this. The engine can also be converted to run as a Turbojet in the 1,000 lb thrust class.

You can buy one at:

Not only that, it will run on JP4, or JF, or whatever it is they call that stuff, which is like kerosene or diesel. No more high-test. Of course, it will empty the GT40 fuel tanks in about four minutes but you'll be going so fast you'll coast the rest of the way...
All kidding aside, several years ago these were tried in a lot of high-speed big offshore powerboats. They DO make tons of power and they DO make whatever they're in go fast, but you have to carry LOTS of fuel and the waste heat is a problem. Now, do they make anything in the 400-500 hp class. And, do they even need a gearbox or does the turbine serve as its' own torque converter?

Jim, you might want to check out Mark Nyes turbine hobbiest website. He put one of these in a Jet-boat!
Turbine Boat

The rated output is 1350 horsepower at 313 pounds (less transmission). It does need a transmission and definetly a clutch. The output shaft is geared at 3.25:1, which allows 1,270 lb-ft of torque at 6000 rpm (at the output shaft). Lets see a big block that can do those numbers at that weight!
