Audi / Porsche Transaxle Differences?

What are the differences between the Porsche 016 from the 944/944 turbo and the Audi 016? The common U.S. Porsche versions appear to be the 016J or the 016K.

This has been covered before, you might want to search on it.

The biggest and most predominant problem is that the 944 has no provision for a clutch since it works in a torque tube application.

I'm moving this to drivetrains where it belongs.

Thanks, Ron.

I had done a search, but only came up with a single post (by you, coincidentally!) that basically said the same thing.

I was just wondering if there was any more on it at all.

There is more somewhere, but, like many things it is probably hidden in some three page thread with a topic that has nothing to with transaxles.

The 944 has a much more favorable ring gear and is a good candidate to swap into the Audi unit, they fit fine. A nice combo is the 5N Audi box with a 3.44 ring gear from the 944 box.

The 944 has different indivdual gear ratios too, but the gears are welded onto the shafts and cannot be swapped.

One place to get some info on porsche/audi stuff is PAP in Georgia.

They are a well known supplier of porsche/audi used parts.

here is a link to their site
web page

I have not done any biz with them in a long time,,,,but they have a good reputation among the local Porsche club racers.

hope this helps.
