Ford 302 engine specialists and transmissions

I need some links and info for ford windsor engines. I need sites and or info on 302 engine builders. I want to build a gt40 kit but I want to know where to get a transmission for it also? I would appreciate any response.

There are a ton of Ford engine folks out there that can build a motor to your requirements.

Search the forum for transmission options. Many depend on your kit selection. Audi, Renault, ZF, Quaife, the sky is the limit. Most wrecking yards have Audi boxes at a reasonable price.

I heard jegs has a 302 long block with 345 hp which is the engine I will use in my 40 with a summit 347 stroker kit.

I think the obvious choice here is Levy Racing. You can get engines in any level you want, transmissions and even your RF GT40. Talk to Gordon.

Just finished reading the latest issue of Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords (MMFF). You gotta hand it to those guys.
They provide more objective data on Ford engines than
anyone. And you gotta love those AFR heads!

As Neal pointed out, there are a LOT of reputable
shops that can provide powerful engines at very competitive
prices. In fact there is now so much competition (and good
parts available) that I doubt horsepower per $$$ has ever
been cheaper (NOS excluded). Unless you want a true race
engine, you can buy a quality street/strip piece for $ 10 per hp right up to 500 hp or so....just name your hp level.
Now if we could only find some 500 hp transmissions without
breaking the bank...

That FMS 345HP crate motor is hard to beat for the price. $2995 from a local SoCal vendor. Anyone know what is it's suggested RPM limit?

Is that the issue where they did the final dyno tests??

I've just bought a S/H FMS 'GT40' spec 345 bhp engine here in the UK. The owner told me the max power is at about 6500. For me it's ideal, I particularly like the ally heads for their weight saving & it's prolly 100+ bhp more than my current marine spec 302.

I'll prolly it right in, aside from swapping the flywheel & re-balancing. I'd also like an ally water pump.

I also believe it's a good starting point for more power at a later date! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No, that was the 2nd group of heads on a 331 CID. 448 HP was the high, 445 high Torque. Pretty impressive.

The 3rd group is next. 500 HP small block? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I also have the FMS 345HP in my GT. For $3000 it is fantastic. I have 650 Holley on it for now. You fire the car and within seconds (not minutes), it is ready to drive.

It almost feels like a fuel injected car! Once I mess it up and install the webbers I purchased 3 months ago, I will have it dynoed and see if the 345HP is real.

I have that same SVO motor, 345HP X303 alum heads and B303 cam, and a Renault R21 turbo gearbox. I have installed a RPM performer intake and a 750 holley doublepumper. This motor has plenty of power for these cars and the gearbox seams to take this power level well. The 3.44 final drive in the R21 type boxes make this the one to own in the renault lineup. At a freeway speed of 70mph the motor is turning 2350 rpms in 5th and 4th gear is right in the meat of the powercurve about 3200. It will pull VERY hard on the downshift and still is turning a very easy engine speed for crusing in 5th. I would advise that if you use this setup you should get a bellhousing that can fit a full size ford flywheel. This will allow you many clutch options. You can expect to spend about $3000 to buy this motor and about another 500-1000 to complete it with intake man, carb, timeing cover, waterpump, distributor etc. The rebuilt Renaults cost about $3000-$5000 depending on upgrades. They are hard to find in the USA used and thats why a lot of people ar useing Audi's. Audi's are a lot cheaper. Oh and I have set my rev limmiter to 6000rpms. I think that the hyd lifters will not suport much more that about 6500 or so.

Just for those who want to compare-my Renault box has a 3.88 final drive ratio instead of the 3.44- I am taching right at 3000rpm at the same 70 mph that Howard gets at 2300. Nice on the track but tough as a road cruiser and heavier on the gas consumption.

Gee, I guess the 4.11 final drive in my Renault 369 is going to be a stump puller. Anyone want to offer any advice on building an 8,000 RPM 302 that won't break the bank?

Scott

Will a renault work in a RF GT40? I heard they work in GT40NZ. I just wanted to know. I'm intersted in that tranny even if it's hard to find.

8000RPM=$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ You should be looking into a NASCAR road race spec motor. My GUESS is $20K+ could go as high as $30K.

The RF guys on this forum should be able to tell you about gearbox choices.

Scott, unless you are planning mostly drag racing you really should look into getting a different ratio. 4.11 is pretty wicked for general use. I would check with Mark Sibley in the UK or GT40 New Zealand on a 3.44 set of gears and find someone locally to change over. With 3.44 first gear is actually useful - with 4.11 you couldn't get off the gas pedal fast enough to not over rev!
