Where is first gear?

I'm not able to start/run/push my car at the moment, so was wondering if somebody could tell me where first is on a renault box?
The car is fitted with (I'm pretty sure) a Renault 30 gearbox.
If I were to grab hold of the shaft coming out of the gearbox on the R/H side (see pic) what would I have to do to engage first? would I pull or push the shaft? would I twist it right or left?

Pull the rusty bit out (towards the camera)
Then rotate it anti clockwise

CORRECTION

Pull it far out and anticlockwise is Reverse (I am battling to get REVERSE)

So then not fully out
Then Clockwise is first

Adding to what Ian has already said - the UN1 is usually 'sprung' to the 3rd/4th gate position.

So just rotating clockwise should give 3rd and anti-clockwise, 4th...
