Gurney Weslake

Hi there, I am rather new to this but I do see it as a great way to help one another with these great projects! I have a question on Gurney Weslake heads as I am rebuilding one of my old race cars that was well known in NZ and Aussie as the Sidchrome Mustang. T&D make roller rockers for them, part #7900 for racers net $1280.00, Harland Sharp dont know what sort of head this is and have requested more info. Its engine is its original 366 Cleveland based flat tappet unit. As part of its rebuild I want to roller cam it and even though Murray Bunn and Lyall williamson (Sidchrome and PDL mustang engineers) say the original rockers were quite robust, for the sake of reliability and spares I have chosen to upgrade. Has anyone used these rockers in competion and if so have they found any weaknesses, do they fit under stock rocker covers. does anyone know of a slide valve injection system for sale. Also does anyone know of a set of Chevy 4 valve weslake heads for sale similar to the ones used on the Bruce Bellis mk3 cortina that ran in Osca and Sports Sedans in the late 70s, I believe that set went to aussie. George

George, Im racking the memory files trying to think of the Aussie guys name that prepped the Chev motors for Bellis, he specialised in F5000 stuff at the time. Dont ever remember seeing the car with Weslake 4v heads, if it did it would have been after OSCA under SS rules. I know Jane & Co were fitting Boss 302 heads to Chevs in order to make real power at the time. Pat Purcell? was Janes spanner man. Have not used any of that 'exotic' stuff myself.:)

Peter? Malloy.......

Hi George

I had a guy purchased my Chevy to ZF belhousing 18 months ago that has a pair of weslake 4 valve heads for a Chev, only once I have seen, he works for wormald, will try and get a name for you

Hi Guys,
I stumbled over a post by "George" re info about some Weslake heads that were used by Bruce Bellis in a OSCA Cortina years ago, (in NZ) he thought they had gone to Aus. Maybe they have, but after they were auctioned off as "Holden racing heads" by the customs dept. they were then used in a speedway car, then in 2 different JetSprint boats, then sold to a guy, (whose name I've forgotten) that intended to make it a custom table base for his lounge! I can't find George's post here, but I think it was dated mid 2008. Anyway if he see's this, and is still keen to find out info, having built it a couple of times and developed the valve gear on my dyno, and tuned it for methanol in a speedway car, I can tell some interesting storys about it.
Regards,
P.K.
Oh yeah, he's welcome to call me on---027 2324893, NZ 03 3274613 H,

Jac Mac; you are right about Peter Malloy. Back in the day's of F5000, Peter was the engine man. Peter used to prepare Warwick Brown's Lola T332 and engines for others. He was one of the first blokes in Australia to regularly get more than 100HP per litre from a small block Chevy.

George; the other person you may want to track down is Peter Fowler. He built the Mercedes Sports Sedan for Bryan Thompson many years ago that featured a Quad Cam Chevy in it. Could be a valuable source of info for you. He also ran a Matich F5000 for Jimmy Richards in the Tasman series during the late seventy's.

Robert.
