David / Chris, thanks for input. I am looking for something less than 120mm long from centre of v pulley to back of unit, preferably with no electrical connections right at the back face. Thanks again, Frank ( I will follow up the Honda gullwing unit to see if I can get a V pulley on it )

Hi Frank,

I've heard good things about those units but, I've also seen a fair amount of problems on other Ford boards about getting them in a timely manner. The general consensus I've read is to make sure you have a ship date and that the part is in stock.

Frank,
You have to let us know what the project is?? If it is space constraints, have you considered running it off the half shafts or similar rotating object such as the flywheel? Or mounting it in an unconventional place like the top of the engine above the water pump, assuming you have one!!
I know some of the Gull Wings have a ton of electronics on them so they have to put out some power.

Thanks for the warning Ron, I will ring them tomorrow. Bill, no its just a full house Gurney Weslake with dry sump pump etc, we have just kept everything tight to the front of the engine to maintain its position ( in a GTD ) without having to modify bulkhead etc. Plan is to mount it directly in front of the left hand cylinder head, but the v belt alignment has been moved back closer to the block making things tight ! Thanks guys for all input, Frank

Frank -

I looked at a race 289 a couple of weeks ago on webers that was running what looked like a tiny alternator to me. The engine builder said it was from a Citroen 2CV and was fine for the TVR Griff it was being used in (Points ignition but with full road-spec lighting)

Obviously I don't know what the rated output is but I guess so long as you're not running Blackpool illuminations from it you may well be ok.

Another possibility perhaps??

Actually there are quite a few of them about, and lots of parts suppliers here in the states.

The shop where my GT40 is being assembled are actually specialists in auto electric work; I'll find out if they know of anything.

Have you looked in the marine market- an alternator from an outboard such as a Honda would be smaller, although you'd have to fit the pulley on it.
